There's a lot of banter over UT getting or not getting scholarship signees with top end talent. But can those with more roster/recruiting insight speak to the quality of PWO's UT has gotten in this cycle? According to a different site, Jamar Price who was previously committed to play RB for AFA has now accepted a PWO offer from UT.

I just do not remember a class in the past where UT got this many PWO's who had legitimate offers and interest from other good FBS programs. Is it just more reporting or is this a change?

Posted this in main thread, but these are the 3 stars I know of that are PWOs. Might be others too

1) Navy Shuler
2) Charlie Browder
3) Jackson Hannah (hasn't been reranked as a transfer, but throwing him in based on HS rating)
4) Shannon Blair
5) Derek Taylor
6) Camron Douglas (?) Unverified

Do Preferred walk-ons have the same privileges as scholarship players, such as dining, dormitory, training room, athletic gear and other items?

Teams are permitted 85 scholarship players. They can carry something like 105 on the roster. A PWO gets one of those roster spots but isn't on scholarship. I think most of those slots are filled with PWO's... I just haven't noticed UT getting this kind of quality before. Devo posted at least 6 that could have had scholarships elsewhere.

Believe 247 has said before they do get much of those benefits as a team member (not dormitory I believe, that would be room and board, I think they'd be liable for paying that).

Preferred walk-ons arrive to college with a roster spot guaranteed for them. Walk-ons, however, arrive to college without a guaranteed roster spot. Neither preferred walk-ons nor walk-ons receive a scholarship their first year on campus. They both have the opportunity to compete for them in later years, but preferred walk-ons are often first in line for available scholarships.

Agree. Is anyone else doing this to the extent we are? Hard to tell when they don't show up on the recruiting sites.

My understanding is the same perks minus having to pay for classes, books, and room and board. Think they get the same athletic gear, nutrition, training and access as the other players though.

They also pay tuition. If they are a Tennessee resident, they may also qualify for a Pell Grant.

Maybe due to NIL/grants. let's these kids get to where they get full tuition through academic scholarship and grants and enough NIL to play on robinhood lol.

I think there are limits on what other kinds of help a walk on can get.

NIL on the other hand could get interesting. There could come a day when 5* guys "walk on" knowing as soon as they sign the NIL money will pour in.

Its the wild west out there right now. Would not surprise me to see the NIL reigned in, at least to some degree.. There is simply too much room for mischief in NIL.

Pretty sure BYU is already offering to cover tuition for walk ons through NIL.

UT has a scholarship limit at this time so all of these 3 stars are brought in with NIL help. Most will probably end up as back up depth or on the scout team. Good way to fill in some empty holes with the scholarship limitations.

You may be using shorthand but I'm pretty sure the school cannot do that.

But that's not much of an obstacle. It will just be a friend of a friend of a friend who happens to know someone who is the wife of a certain CEO who said he's interested in hiring some non-scholarship football players to represent his company.

They have full ability to receive full financial aid for academics through academic scholarships and grants. They're limited only by access to team dining facilities and athletic dorms. That an athletic full ride pay for.

Then why do we seldom see those guys starting? Not challenging your statement... just weird to me that a lot of them do not become starters or major contributors.

Agree.

Folks have disagreed with me but IMO two ways available to help get control would be first to limit portal transfers to a couple of windows within the year. Maybe one between the BCS CG and NSD and the other between the end of spring practice and the end of the spring term.

The second way would be to require some proof that those paying NIL's are actually using a player's name, image, or likeness for legitimate business reasons. Something like: "Hey, I'm Cedric Tillman. You can catch me at West Knoxville Toyota this Saturday. I look forward to meeting fans there for autographs and free ice cream." Or, "Hello, I'm Hendon Hooker. The next time you follow the Vols to an away game make sure to plan your stops with Flying J"

Because they have to make the grades to achieve an academic scholarship... athletic scholarships are derived from endowments. For instance, I doubt a Niswonger scholarship recipients are 4* and 5* athletes. Also athletic scholarships were entitled to "stipends" that effectively paid them pocket money. With NIL that changes things and a PWO now has the ability to make the same money as an athletic scholarship player while paying for their school through an academic scholarship and not really paying out of pocket for meal plans and etc.

We have never taken 3 star kids who have abilities to play at good FCS program. and some who have offers to Sunbelt Conference USA ect so much better PWO. No doubt Tn using NIL this way until we are ready to go after big guns. In CHRIST Alone
