Anybody have thoughts on over the range microwaves? I think I would like to have the free counter space. And I don't remember the last time I turned on the vent.

We use ours, maybe once a week, if that. If hubby warms up something for lunch, or I steam a bag of broc, cauliflower, or sweet potatoes, that's about it.

Maybe I just look for a smaller countertop model.

We went with a countertop model, but it’s around the corner from the main cooking area.

I was fine with over the range in younger years, but as old age Arthur-itis keeps discovering new joints to mess with (right shoulder), the safety issues of lifting hot things down from that height made the decision.

We put one in and wish we had another option. We use tall stock pots and the size of the microwave makes it nearly impossible to get a ladle in them. If you have ANY other option, I would go that way. We put ours in because the joists in the ceiling ran the wrong way to put in a hood. I may still destroy the kitchen and put the hood in vs. the micro.

That's an excellent point. Also, I'm short, so there's that.

I thought about this too. I had hubby put up some shelves in the kitchen where I keep the crockpots, the stand mixer, vitamix, all that stuff, and I thought of putting the microwave there too. I think I'm gonna do that.

Hubby's gonna hate it when I tell him he doesn't have to tear out that vent hood. Hahah

Also, if you do go over the range, make sure and look at a floor model. The lights on our last over the range were awesome. Halogen bulbs. The new style is to put a ****** single LED in and it doesn't light up a damn thing.

I wondered about the lighting too. I use that more than the vent.

I do not own a microwave.
