What happened to this old man is horrible and disgusting. Makes your blood boil if you watch the video. With all that being said, suiing the PD for $21 million dollars cause someone lightly pushed you to the ground is absurd. If the event caused some life changing event or injured him for life I could understand it. Point is, the guy got shoved to the ground by a cop, and he was able to walk away and continue working. Thoughts?

agreed what happened to the walmart greeter is bad, but at the same time 21 million dollars? the only reason that is even viable is because the guy works for the city, if some regular joe blow came and pushed this guy and he wasnt hurt then nothing major would come from it...

I hope he wins and the cop gets fired. Eventually they will learn laws are there for them too

agreed, but i just hate the precedent that is set for outrageous dollar amounts for lawsuits, sometimes it gets to the point to where the police officer is more concerend about being sued then doing his/her job

My first thought is they are asking for the 21 million and will settle on a lesser amount that will not be disclosed. If what this guy said is true, and this is not the first time this detective did something like this then the police department he worked for was negligent, this guy obviously cannot, for whatever reason, handle himself and does not need to be employed by any police department.

That precedent was set long ago.

As far as police officers being worried about being sued I agree. Though I will say some of that is brought on by the habit they have of covering for other officers. In many cases situations that would normally help weed out undesirables are not mentioned or covered up, keeping people who cannot handle it on the job.

yah, its kind of a double edged sword, they need to help each other out etc etc, but at the same time, it lets some of the power hungry folks slip through the cracks

yea $21 Million would help with the mental anguish. LOL

the dollar amount is a little out there but the city chose to continue this cop's employment even after previous incidents. They should be held liable for the bad decision of keeping an ahole on a power trip on the payroll. Plus the other "officer of the law" didn't seem to care enough to stop his buddy.

The fact that this officer wasn't fired previously is amazing...the fact that he wasn't fired after this highly covered incident is even more amazing.

I would agree many lawsuits if not most are just opportunists pushing their luck for a payday. However if this isn't the 1st time this officer has been involved in this behavior it would'nt suprise me. Think about it all you have to do is take a drive anywhere about 50 miles and you'll 1st hand see total strangers pissing on each other, your inconvieniencing them by being in their way. People nowadays act impatient and rude over nothing and shoving a Wal-mart door greeter...him being a service person dealing with the public makes a nice target. He's already seen as a lesser human being by most by his position...a server. As far as the suit amount don't most incorperated towns have a set ceiling limit dollar amount they can be sued for?

if ceilings are set, then the city inadvertently(SP?) is condoning being sued if something doesnt please the citizen or something happens,,,

That particular officers superiors deserve to be fired as well. If they are not going to fire this office, what makes them better than him? If a officer is showing a pattern, why put your name, police station, and city to shame? If they had fired him after this incident they could almost wash their hands of this matter. The fact they kept him on staff is going to hurt them badly.

The City of Chattanooga shouldn't have to pay $21 million, though. $5,000-10,000 and the cop losing his job is reasonable.

if it would have been my pawpaw when he was alive, that cop would have been in some trouble,, pawpaw woulve have embarrased that cop

Same goes with my grandpa. He is 72 and still welding and building wreckers. He would have thrown that cop into a vending machine
