I'm not as content or as patient as some, but I think breaking out of midpack will come down to the coaches-- their hunger to win, their aggressiveness in making the changes they need to win faster and their willingness to bring in new people and embrace new ideas to move beyond plateaus.

Mark Richt got UGA to consistent wins, division titles and conference championships. That was good for a while. Then UGA wanted more. They fired Richt and Kirby took them to the next level. He went about it a different way. UGA changed.

Phillip Fulmer won a NC at UT. He was hungry-- some say he was ruthless-- then he got complacent. He made some bad hires, had some bad losses, wasn't as committed, and the Fulmer way was no longer a winning way. Nobody since has duplicated his success. Have they been determined enough, skilled enough and focused enough? No. Did they surround themselves with the right people? No.

Pat Summitt won "the right way" at UT. Pat was hungry, she was driven, she worked exceptionally hard and recruited the best players she could get within her standards. She set her own goals and made her own luck. Holly couldn't duplicate Pat's way. She couldn't change, and she couldn't grow into a new role. I think Kellie can, if she's willing to make some changes.

Rick Barnes understands "the right way." But is he hungry enough, is he driven enough, is he willing to make the changes to get over the hump? What is he most motivated to do? Is he focused on hanging banners and willing to work within the current landscape to do it?

There are many ways to work within a system and rise above it-- even if the system itself has inherent flaws and needs to evolve. You win with people. Pat said it, and she was right. UT has implemented a foundation, defined a culture and is giving the marquee HCs the resources and infrastructure to build successful programs. It's up to the coaches to build with people and win with them. UT is a school that can win, though they haven't made it the easiest place to win at the highest level. I think some of our programs are closer than others-- and that opinion correlates to the HC.
Well said - I appreciate your perspective.

Genuine question….what makes you say it’s dysfunctional?
In one of the players’ threads, Hubbs said they didn’t really have a defensive “hot board” so to speak. I just get the sense they don’t know what they want and can’t agree on defensive talent and that’s part of the reason we are struggling on that side (not RG).

Billy High can’t get here soon enough. Sounds like our recruiting department is dysfunctional.
Good post. Makes me 😡. Again, burning the forest down is/was the no plan/unrealistic approach. Truly, starting over from scratch. Speaks as to why we got it absolutely handed to us on the trail in many instances even when it was apparent we could have landed a kid.

No one, in their right mind, is going to fire anyone on this staff anytime soon. Do a little research and look at the contract Heupel signed. This staff is doing an excellent job here and our administration understands that.

I know that but your average fan doesn’t. We’ve seen how toxic this fan base can be is all I’m saying. I don’t think scholarship reductions and sanctions will matter if we’re not making significant jumps in a few years. I just think the administration has to have a plan to deal with that, if that comes to fruition.

Isn't that what what's-her-face was for?

Shouldn't the hot board and priorities be set by the coaching staff? That sounds more like an indictment of Banks (or the position coaches) than the support staff guys. If the coaches are having a hard time identifying the guys they want because the support staff isn't doing a good job of vetting and presenting options, that would be a problem too. Of course they could just ask VN. We have many experts here with large monitors, cherry wood desks, and cordovan leather chairs.

I can smell this last sentence.

No. "Fans" or voters install the people who do or do not enforce the rules. Fans act indirectly while voters act directly. But the legitimacy of those who enforce the rules is a product of public approval. In too many cases, CFB fans punish those who DO enforce the rules.

If the attitude I responded to prevails then what is the result? Those with the most willingness and ability to cheat... win. And that will NEVER be a level playing field. It will generally disfavor some programs and favor others. It will favor the continued dominance of strong programs and inhibit if not prevent other programs from rising to challenge.
Welcome to life. Get over it and let it go.

BTW, I was addressing the idea that breaking the rules is OK if "everyone" just because the rules are being broken. I was "test driving" the "logic"... and it fails. The objective should be to get everyone OBEYING the rules... or change the rules.
You tried using the most extreme circumstances that are completely different minus that it happens. It's a strawman argument and one made by a Moran or idgit.

CJH needs to wake up quick

Look we don’t know anything, we just put pieces together and make an educated opinion. I am of the opinion the offensive staff gels well together and are comfortable in going all in on a few guys that aren’t heavily pursued. The defensive side feels like it a group of mercs assembled at the local watering hole and they bicker over who to recruit and whose résumé is better. But nobody questions RG and he doesn’t take input from the others. He’s the untouchable wagon boss.

Sitting here watching the game in quarantine again. As some of you know I've recently taken a Pittie mastiff mix in on rescue. I normally take in farm animals and as I posted elsewhere I recently lost my goat herds oldest resident. That hit very hard.

My rescues are typically farm animals but I took Phoenix in at the request of a detective from a small town police department the next county over. My grandmother who was part Cherokee and very spiritual once told me in indigenous peoples way of thinking when something is dying it is preparing for something else to take it's place. My goat that recently passed we had named grandma because she was the grandmother and great grandmother to many of the goats on this farm when we took it over. She passed roughly one week after I took in this rescue, and just after I identified a forever family for Phoenix. I feel my goat Grandma, and my grandmother at work tonight and that has me a little in my feels.

I apologize for the distraction but in a weird way my interactions with many of you here make me feel normal in a world where interactions with people in real time are a challenge for me, to the point I avoid them if at all possible.

Please support your local rescues, volunteer if you can, donate money if you can. Everything you do saves and improves lives!
😘

LOL at "educated opinion." Some people do the research before they formulate theirs. Many, many others formulate theirs, try to yell louder than everyone else and then get defensive when anyone dares to question them.
