Thanks for posting. When Bobby Majors played, I was really young and just starting to follow the Vols - the PSU game was my first. But I remember my dad talking about (tricky) Dickey and Bill Majors whose accident happened less than a mile from our house. Lots of great players and games in the 70s but the program was slowly heading down under Battle.

I came up playing high school football during this era. Played with Carl Witherspoon mentioned in the article at Karns. Carl's younger brother Ed we called "Spud" also played with us and played college football at MTSU if I recall correctly. Many will recall Bobby Majors' running gait. He was moving much faster than he looked and many of his kick and punt returns came as a result of opposing players taking a poor cut off angle to the ball. Even watching from the stands or on TV it often looked for sure he wouldn't make the corner, but he would just glide right on by. Another Karns alum walked on for the Vols in our Freshman year at UT in the fall of 1969 (Gary you know who you are ;) and one of the first things the coaches had them do was run a warmup 1/4 mile around the track. So, Gary starts off sprinting (this story was related to me by a friend who was there) well about halfway through the run Gary's leading the entire team - by a lot. One or more coaches take exception to a walk-on freshman leading the pack even if it is a warmup run so they start yelling at the veterans to pick up the pace. Gary's determined to win and is giving it all he has but here comes Bobby Majors from several yards back and overtakes Gary to win the race (or if you're a scholarship player – the warmup 😊)

There were a number of really good players from Tennessee and greater Knoxville that played for the Vols in the early 70’s. Tim Townes from Bearden, Jackie Walker from Fulton, were two we played against in HS. I’m sure there were others I’m forgetting. It has been 50 + years ago. lol

We are a seriously lacking 0-2 in the Bama legacy coaching department. Can we permanently make certain that we've learned our lesson?

Don’t forget Tim Priest from Huntingdon, he actually played with Bobby Majors and I think still holds pass interception record.

My fondest memory of Bobby Majors was his punt return for a TD in the Sugar Bowl against Air Force. I was sitting on the second row in the end zone and he came right at me.

I remember getting his autograph way back when. He was one of my favorites.
When I was 14 and it was just my Dad and me (1968-69ish), he took me a basketball game at FCHS when Bobby was playing. I'd never seen these big guys play before and Bobby was running the length of the court and, to a kid, it sounded like a herd of bulls from goal to goal. Pretty intense for this kid.

Yes, that Penn State game in 1971 was a great one. What an atmosphere. Franco Harris and Lydell Mitchell starting for PSU. John Huffnagel at QB. 31-11 Tennessee in a blow out. I remember the rolls of toilet paper streaming down from the upper decks when we scored.

Bobby had a special way of returning punts. He didn't really have any fancy juke moves. It was more of a slip where, at the last second, he would turn his body and slip by the defender. He was dangerous every time he touched the ball.

I went to TMI in Sweetwater. We played Castle Hgts twice in 68, tied both times. And Bobby Majors was exceptional. I can't remember breakfast so don't remember 68 much. But I was proud to see him the Orange & White and watching him excel in Neyland.

And Rocky Goode from Bearden too. I worked a summer job with him in 71. He went on to be a higher up in the SEC officials. Saw him several times on TV.

Good memories. I recall Bobby taking a punt to the house in a post season all star game coached by Battle, who patted him on the azz with his clipboard as Bobby ran by the sideline on the way to scoring. ( Sorry for the Faulkner length run on sentence)

I remember that and watched the 1/1/71 Sugar Bowl game on YouTube trying to find it. That explains it. Replay was new and they showed it several times in slow-motion.

That game was special. It's always been one of my favorites. It was the last game of the season and Penn State was undefeated. They had no answer for Bobby Majors. I think we snapped a 15 game win streak.

Bobby Majors was a stud--outstanding D-back, punt returner, athlete. He was part of a couple of the best defensive backfields Tennessee
has ever had. A group that intercepted a lot of passes.

Tim I think is still the career pass interception leader with 18. Eric may have beaten his one year record. I had privilege playing with Tim in high school, great guy and best athlete I’ve ever played any sports with.

Tim Priest Concludes Career As Vols Football Analyst; His Replacement Is Pat Ryan
Priest is TN career leader with 18 interceptions and Berry had 14. Berry holds the SEC & TN record for career interception RETURN yards which was held by the late Bobby Wilson of Ole Miss( also long time baseball coach at Carson Newman).

I played against Bobby in high school. I fought off a block on the opening kickoff and was prepared to make the tackle on him. That is when he introduced me to the effectiveness of the stiff arm. Felt like he broke my neck. He seemed to run in choppy little steps but was moving with deceiving speed toward the end zone. One of my favorite Vols
