Powell Free Throw Attempt?

The way we were shooting FTs at the end, one would've thought they were distracting us every time.

SVescovi really came to life after some bench time early in 2nd half after shooting something like 1/7 3pt line.

Came back in hot with shooters hand and more aggressive.

Fulky was player of the game but SVescovi, Nkamhoua, JJJ and seasoned players really stepped up.
JJJ can’t buy an outside shot. Teams are letting him put it up

JJJ was 2 for 6 from 3. Not bad. I agree his offense has struggled some but 5 for 11 overall against zona I s pretty good. I am optimistic he can do enough on offense to complement all he does of defense and rebounding to help UT rise to the top of the SEC.

He does many things to help this team that do not show in the stat sheet. He isn't perfect and will make unforced errors at times but this team would be a lesser team without his unnoticed production.

Head band was running his mouth all night…I’d say the T was a cumulative of the nights mouthing
Head band made the classically bad move of clapping his hands while sarcastically telling the ref he made a good call. What struck me so much was how delusional Zona players were all game. They would body check someone out of bounds and then seem shocked when the whistle was blown.

James was 5-11 on FG’s last night and 2-6 from 3. That’s a far cry from “can’t buy an outside shot.” His numbers are coming back from a tough start, but injuries had some part in that. Barnes and Justin Powell both stated what a great shooter he is.

Really weird take to have after JJJ has had his two best games of the season in two of the last three games.

vs. UNCG - 12 points, 4/7 from 3
vs. Arizona - 12 points, 2/6 from 3, 5/11 overall

He had 3 made 3s in his first 5 games he played. He's made 7 in his last 3.

Arizona’s coach, Tommy Lloyd, was very classy in his comments after the game. He told his own players to quit complaining and just play. He also made an interesting comment saying their plan was to let Fulky get his points and keep the other Vols at bay.
Based on the first part of the season, I think that was a good game gameplan. Fulky had been reluctant and hesitant offensively all season. Putting his defenender under the rim and messing with his head daring him to make scoring plays backfired because Fulky finally decided to be aggressive and decisive with the ball. If that kickstart stays with him we can send Coach Lloyd a thank you card. However, other teams won't make it that easy on him.

Agree. I thought it was a crazy strategy for UA’s coach to do that, but my vision was hindsight. I can’t imagine giving anyone that much room to operate, but I just mailed Lloyd a thank you note card for last night.

I would have to go back and watch again, but in one of Fulky’s first half free throws, the Zona defender closest to him threw his arms out right before Fulky shot it. It was the front end of a one and one, and Fulky missed.

I know when I played growing up, it was ok for guys set up along the paint to put their arms up in the air to make the shooter see it. But this appeared to me to be out in front of Fulky just a few feet away.

It seemed to me that Zona had several dirty tricks and jawed all night too. Suprises me a little because of Lloyd’s tutelage under Few.

Yeah, there were several instances of questionable behavior. Lloyd is a good guy and didn’t appreciate his players complaining the whole night.

Good coaching moment. You can’t let an opponent distract you. Focus in basketball is critical. UT fans try to distract opponents. It is called home field or court advantage. If opponent does something that is a foul, turn to the ref and ask them to call the foul if you are at the line.

He can only hold it for so long before it’s called but I think the refs would’ve given him some leeway given the circumstance. Anyway alls well that ends well

You are correct, back when I played you had 10 seconds and as far as I know the rule is the same . . . . Powell should have regrouped then shot.

Oh well, he hit the second one and that was it!!

Yes he did. Said "The 1st team who complains to a ref about a bad cal is usually the team that loses the game. I don't like losing games, so quit complaining to refs and focus on winning the game". Loved it.

Now, it looks like he has his work cut out for him to train those numbskulls on the same.

And as far as Powell's free throw goes... if you ain't cheatin', ya ain't tryin'. I'd try it if it could sway the game. If you get penalized , then you lose anyway. And the refs could have handled it too. But, Powell should have stayed locked in and drained the 1st one anyway IMO. Big wins take mental toughness. And he did nail the 2nd.

AZ seemed a little bush league to me. Some of their fouls were borderline flagrant all night long. All the AZ fans are crying about how they lost due to officiating, however, I think they were fortunate not to have several flagrant fouls called on them.

That Elbow Smash into Fulky was certainly Flagrant!

His shot is so flat it has to be the perfect trajectory. He’s never going to get a bounce or rimmer.
Tough to be a good shooter at any distance without the arc. He could definitely learn by changing his point of release to achieve a more natural arching shot. I grew up in the Jerry West, Rick Mount, Oscar Robinson timeframe. A new release point would really help JJJ.

Watched the game again and Arizona is a very talented team but they play dirty ball. Gonna cost them down the road all that talking and cheap shots. Couple of those intentional fouls could and one should have been a flagrant.

The problem i have is that something should have been called. You are correct about having 10 seconds, but you aren't allowed to start your shooting motion and then pull it down at the FT line. Essentially you can't "pump fake" at the line or it is a violation on the shooter. I assume Powell knew that so he tried to just get the shot up before he was whistled.

The refs should have stopped the attempt and called a violation on someone. The refs essentially allowing a play on makes zero sense.

This. And there is no way that Powell, Chandler, and James all heard it, and the official standing 5 feet from the player alleged to have said something, didn't hear it. At worst, some preventative officiating should have taken place when it became clear that something on the floor distracted Powell. It was bush league, but pretty on-brand for Arizona, apparently.

A pump fake wouldn’t apply on the first of two shots.

Why not? If a guy steps in the lane before the shooter releases the ball, it is a lane violation regardless if it's the first or second shot, correct? Now, sure, it would be doubly dumb to commit a mental error of that magnitude in a situation that wouldn't even reward that quick first step to get position to begin with, but still a violation all the same, I believe.
