Thanks. I don't think anyone disputes that there are "experts" on both sides of the issue.
Efficacy of face mask in preventing respiratory virus transmission: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Methods
The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement was consulted to report this systematic review. Relevant articles were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP (Chinese) database.
Results
A total of 21 studies met our inclusion criteria. Meta-analyses suggest that mask use provided a significant protective effect (OR = 0.35 and 95% CI = 0.24–0.51). Use of masks by healthcare workers (HCWs) and non-healthcare workers (Non-HCWs) can reduce the risk of respiratory virus infection by 80% (OR = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.11–0.37) and 47% (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.36–0.79). The protective effect of wearing masks in Asia (OR = 0.31) appeared to be higher than that of Western countries (OR = 0.45). Masks had a protective effect against influenza viruses (OR = 0.55), SARS (OR = 0.26), and SARS-CoV-2 (OR = 0.04). In the subgroups based on different study designs, protective effects of wearing mask were significant in cluster randomized trials and observational studies.
Conclusions
This study adds additional evidence of the enhanced protective value of masks, we stress that the use masks serve as an adjunctive method regarding the COVID-19 outbreak.
That's nothing more than a study of studies. The latest study was 2014. Some of those studies said that mask wearing was significant. Some showed no benefit. Unless they can tell us why masks work in some instances and not in others such a study is useless

Of course it was a study of studies, that's what gives it leverage.
I don't care whether or not you guys believe masks help.
But don't quote one doctor as if it's proof they do not help.
That's as stupid as posting the quotes of one doctor who believes they work and calling it conclusive proof.

There's a common sense side to all of this also. 1 micron is one millionth of a meter. You can hold some masks up to a light and see through them. Shouldn't take a scientist to realize something as small as a virus could easily pass through cloth masks. The video Mr. Volinwayne posted demonstrates moisture passing through 5 surgical masks.

Then there's point about historical practices. This is not the first pandemic. All of sudden now in 2021 we need masks to help stop the spread but didn't the past 50 years? I'm calling BS on this. It's all about getting people used to being controlled by government (like sheep). I'm seeing reports of cops in Germany using measuring sticks to fine people for not social distancing.

Speaking of social distancing, who came up with 6 feet? Where are the peer reviewed, clinical studies? I'd be willing to wager than viral transmission could occur at distances greater than 6 feet.

And you'd be right. The six feet guidelines are based off of 80 year old experiments that have not been updated. The current research in transmission shows a greater connection between convection currents/ air stagnation and infection risk.

My classes haven't social distanced and haven't worn masks all semester and I've only had two students get sick - in band, which is all about air and spit. The two kids who got the flu were sitting on either side of someone who came to class with a fever, was in their social group, and had multiple meetings with each other that day. The room has a high rate of air exchange and air is pulled up to exhaust instead of down.

Then why have we not seen a monumental push by public health officials to combat the obesity epidemic? Maybe this is the opportunity to actually make progress in the area ... If people are scared enough that they would stay home from church, shutter their businesses, and forcibly cover their children's faces, maybe, JUST MAYBE they could be convinced to put down the Mountain Dew, stop eating garbage, and get off their asses.

Instead, the singular message is "get the shot."
Oh…infinity likes for this truth.

More like 15 feet. Social distancing farce… because “we just had to come up with something to make us look like we are doing something”

Money. Money. Money.

Your idea takes on the sugar lobby, corn lobby, food additive lobby, food production company lobbies, they'll probably bring along the entertainment lobby somehow... I can go on.

We've let the inmates run the asylum in the name of freedom and deregulation. As a result, these entities have paid to block or hide research into obesity and other medical issues.

If a local, state, or federal representative tries to do anything about this there will be so much money slung to eliminate that threat to profit that their career will be over

The one area in which I was in full support of Trump was when he said he was going to "wage war on big pharma".
I wish he would have.
Make no mistake, he tried. Big Pharma proved too powerful for even his deal-making prowess.

This was certainly an area that basically all of us (save drug manufacturers or stockholders) could get behind.

**Addendum: Once the pandemic began, almost all criticism of the industry was put on hold as we scrambled for vaccines and/or therapeutics.

I've always been suspicious of the big pharma business model. They act like they are the saviors of mankind with drugs that are supposed to make us well. Yet, they make more money when more people get sick.

you are saying our public health officials are beholden to the the lobbies? Dr. Fauci is in the pocket of Big Sugar, Big Corn, Big Food Additive, etc?

and this is the result of too much freedom and deregulation?

do you think medical professionals are unaware of and silent on the issues of obesity?

I agree with KD that it's odd that our current Public Health leadership is only pushing the vaccine and masking/social distancing instead of using the opportunity to push responsible eating/lifestyle (like they have ever since I can remember) but suggesting they are purposely not doing so because they are beholden to the obesity lobby seems quite the stretch.

You laugh but omicron outbreaks- and remember, omicron ain't killing anybody- is about to lead to Canada's NHL teams shutting arenas to the public again.

Oh I believe it. The economic reckoning that is on the way is going to be tragic.

Never been much of a conspiracy theorist, but I am being swayed. The attempt to put millions into poverty almost looks purposeful now.

I've been studying and practicing Marketing for nearly 4 decades. What many miss about the concept is that it is not about persuasion or getting people to do things/buy things - it is fundamentally about figuring out how to create conditions for a mutually beneficial exchange. If I want you to do business with me, I need to create and offer something of value to you (as determined by you; not me).

Where Fauci and other Public Health officials fail at Marketing is that believe they are the diviners of value and their job is to convince/persuade/cajole/deceive the public into accepting what they (PH officials) have determined is the desired good. Then they can't understand why the dogs won't eat the dog food.

Fauci and other Public Health officials have done a terrible job at Marketing. Unfortunately, they don't recognize it and double down on the same (and more extreme eg. mandates) tactics that are destined to fail.

The Great Reset. You must first destroy something to “build (it) back better “.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis: No More Mask Mandates Because 'the Emergency Is Over'

"The emergency is over. You know, public health [officials] don't get to tell people what to wear; that's just not their job," Polis said. "You don't tell people what to wear. You don't tell people to wear a jacket when they go out in winter and force them to [wear it]. If they get frostbite, it's their own darn fault."
