I guess I should be happy that you are sad because it is an admission that you view teaching as relevant and impactful on society.
I've always seen the irony in the many on the right who degrade the teaching profession out of one side of their mouth while bemoaning the negative effects of the educational system on society out of the other side.
I'm guessing you guys can't fully appreciate that irony.

But no need to be sad. When I had the honor and privilege of teaching kids, I followed my favorite Einstein quote:
“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of minds to think.”
In fact, it's a poster I always encourage new teachers to place in their classroom.
I have seen many students, many adults, and a whole lot of people in the PF, who knew plenty of facts but could not think their way out of a wet paper bag.
It was never more evident than in my first venture into the 2a thread. I was amazed at the amount of factual knowledge coupled with the complete inability to think.
Einstein had a notoriously poor memory. When asked how it was that he could not know his own phone number, Einstein replied,
"Never memorize something that you can look up.”

Today it is even worse, we are now surrounded by non-thinkers who are only memorizing alternative facts.
