I don't expect us to reel in a Top 5 class next year. As long as this NCAA cloud is hanging over us we'll be fortunate to finish with a Top 25 class. I agree we are moving in the right direction. Our fanbase has the potential to be it's own worst enemy here by ramping up expectations too high too fast. The reality is we may very well be 4-6 in a few weeks and it'll be an improvement. I think Heupel can pull off a Stoops at Kentucky type rebuild IF we give him time to do so. He has faced unprecedented challenges here in Year 1, and met them with a measure of professional competence our last several coaches were incapable of.
The sanction is what’s killing us. I just hope they don’t let it float over our heads for 3 years and let it kill our recruiting

Performing admirably and needing to tighten up (especially on 3rd down defense) aren't mutually exclusive ideas.

To me, the third down defensive breakdowns have seemed to expose the current deficits of our LBers. We need more experience for the LBs who are here and more athleticism, generally. This likely won't be really fixed for another cycle or two.

I totally agree with this guy. The onfield product looks amazing.

It should help recruiting, but not as much as big NIL deals would.

Hopefully opinions like the one in this tweet aren't turned around and used as ammo to criticize our coaches' recruiting ability in 4 months.

As long as it's not a call about my car warranty, I'm for it.
Sometimes I yank those guys chains. When they ask me what kind of car I have (they should know shouldn’t they since they say they show my car warranty is allegedly about to expire), I tell them stuff like a 1955 Studebaker. Or once I told them I had a 2015 Tata (a brand of Indian Car that I am sure they are familiar with). They of course immediately hang up on me

I don't think it matters personally. Even less with being able to transfer out now without sitting.
NCAA has been weaken. I expect nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Immediately after I read your response, I got another call. I would have taken your lead if my lunch wasn't coming!

While I agree with you, with this staff I will take a 4* with heart and desire over any 5* that feels entitled. Desire and heart can make up a lot on a bad attitude. Don't get me wrong we need 5* players but only if they are team oriented and play for their teammates. A 5* with a bad attitude is just not worth feeding. JMHO

While I agree with the overall premise.......How are you going to determine who has heart and who doesn't? Also, there's only so many 5 stars and more 4 stars but you can't turn them down because you think they have a bad attitude or immature... Better Take all the 5 stars you can get your hands on and handle the other stuff.

Yes, the studs do win the day most of the time. But compare the current recruiting numbers on the field with Clemson vs what we have. They are loaded for bear in that department, where we are the walking wounded with a small assortment of gamers sprinkled in. And we are out performing them week in and week out. Heupel and this staff are more than sound bites. Call me whatever you want to get some likes, but system can overcome a lot in college football, just like I would bet that I have done over you in the rest of real life.

WTH, LOL. Did I read that correctly?

Really ???? 2 for 13 in 3rd down conversions ??? As advertised .?? That gets you beat
I mean, sure, if you want to pick one stat from a single game, we can develop any opinion we want and support it with “facts”.

For me, saying the offense is “as advertised” is to take a step back after 8 games and recognize we just put up 24 points on Alabama in their house and knowing we were still in the game with 14 minutes to play. Yeah, we were bad on 3rd down in this game, but we were 49/98 (50%) on the season prior to this game.

Kentucky is 38/81 (45.7%).
Auburn is 45/98 (45.9%).
Florida is 40/99 (44.4%).
Texas A&M is 43/105 (40.1%).
Georgia is 39/83 (47.0%).

3rd down efficiency hurt us in this game, but we’ve been successful in that area relative to other SEC teams.

You actually said:
I know this is the popular narrative, but the defense just doesn't do anything to give me confidence that they can get off the field.

Except... All the times they've gotten off the field.

They held Ol Miss' high scoring offense to 7 points in the second half. That was a lot of getting off the field.

I'll agree that I'll feel more confident with more depth, and better 3rd down efficiency that would likely come with that, but your "narrative" about your personal confidence levels is a bit ridiculous in this day and age of offensive-slanted rules and high scoring offenses, consiering what they have to work with roster-wise. This Dhas FAR outperformed any expectation for te he year, so far.

If you want to watch 3-2, punt on third down games, you'll need to hit the archives.

You talk with their high school coach and then you talk with the player. If you are good at your job you should be able to tell what you are talking to.

You think 5 stars don't have attitudes? That's bout 75%of what makes them 5 stars. Those kids are Dogs! You gonna not recruit them because of it? To be good at your job as a head coach you should pull in top 10 classes no matter what.

I have played and worked with some really talented people that weren't worth the drama that comes with them. All things equal, I will take a player with the right attitude.

As with the last poster (and you're both free to disagree with me), you have chosen a small snapshot in time as an attempt to prove a larger point. The 2nd half vs Ole Miss, we forced two punts and had an INT, while OM scored a TD and missed a FG. For the game, they were still 11/21 on 3rd down, and 2/3 on 4th down. We got off the field a lot, but we also failed to do so on nearly as many opportunities, too.

Bama was 15/20 on 3rd and 4th down. Florida was 9/15. Pitt was 10/22.

Those are our 4 losses. 47/81 on 3rd and 4th down and only 3 TOs created.

Our current defense doesn't get off the field like they need to do. Making the point that they managed to do so for a half isn't definitive proof of the opposite theory. I'm okay with your disagreement and fine with that not being the popular opinion of people who want to find every silver lining possible with this group that plays hard, though undermanned and outtalented. I'm not making the case that our current defense is awful and the lone spot of contention keeping us from winning ballgames. The entire team has warts, though has performed well enough to give me hope that we are headed in the right direction with an infusion of talent and depth.

They can certainly sell playing time next year in a fun offense and defense especially for transfers. DL, DB, OL, TE, LB all positions of need especially for transfers and JUCO where there is a clear path to the 2 deep.

I honestly don’t believe we need a top 10-15 class every year with this staff. Look what they are doing with what they currently have.

Truth. We'd be a Top 25 program right now w/Pruitt's roster from last season and could plug in the guys we lost via the portal for depth.

DL
Darel Middleton
Greg Emerson
Deandre Johnson
John Mincey

LB
Henry To'o To'o
Quavaris Crouch
Martavius French

DB
Key Lawrence
Shawn Shamburger

OL
Wanya Morris
Jahmir Johnson

RB
Eric Gray
Ty Chandler

I think next year the portal will play a bigger role for us than recruiting HS kids who didn’t even have Tennessee on the map until maybe recently.

In fact I think “recruiting” transfers will become the trend over HS recruiting for many schools, within limits. Obvi HS relationships matter especially in-state and I’m sure the rules on portal transfers will continue to evolve.

But as things stand now portal transfers have college experience and are known commodities whereas HS kids can be a crapshoot with the exception of a handful of consensus 5-stars. And there aren’t many of those and none is coming to Tennessee in the near future.

Portal players have also been thru at least a year of P5 strength & conditioning which is critically important especially on both the O and D lines.

Smart coaches like Heup and co. know what they’re looking for, they can assess potential and coach ‘em up. Sure there will be some misjudgments (Milton) but the potential upside rewards are worth the occasional whiff.

I don’t know if there are “portal recruiting specialists” yet but there probably should be. And I also don’t know what the “tampering” rules are in P5 football but seems to me BTS a rising program like TN could offer a huge showcase with immediate playing time to some top skill players elsewhere who might want to be the featured standout attraction vs a supporting player.

Agree if it was just playing environment and opportunity. But players today are making decisions involving NIL, NCAA, etc. Where Tennessee sits on these issues also has to be considered.
