Urias knocked in runs this series. Buehler can’t hit but last night was able to take a walk and then scored on Mookie’s dinger.

Catchers are often chosen for their defensive skill rather than batting and plenty hit in the 7 or 8 spot. Same with other specific players here and there. Even Bellinger couldn’t find a hit anywhere this season but was hard to pull out of the lineup because of his elite defense.

If people put such a premium on making sure only good batters hit, the logical extension is to have separate offensive and defensive lineups. That would be awful of course. But we’re already one ninth of the way there with the DH.
More and more catchers are chosen more for their offensive skill….. it’s the reason why will Smith has started every game in the series for the Dodgers instead of Austin Barnes….. I would prefer seeing a batter hit than a pitcher stand in there…. The DH is used all the way back through college baseball.

JG had one bad moment as a freshman. Let it go. He was nothing but supportive for his teammates throughout his career when benched for another guy. Rattler and JG are not the same.

Ok I’ll let it go…sorry james guarantano 🥺 I won’t bring up the time he pushed BM off of him after a TD either 🥱🤧

Agree totally. The reason I fell in love with the Cubs as a kid was that the players stayed on the team. Ryne Sandberg, Mark Grace, Leon Durham, Lee Smith, Shawon Dunston, even dudes like Jody Davis, Ferguson Jenkins, etc.

Yep. Reminds me of the Red Sox teams I started rooting for as a kid....Yaz, Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, Carlton Fisk, Butch Hobson, Fred Lynn, Jerry Remy, Luis Tiant, Dennis Eckersley...

Damn, I’m old.

Serious question - what’s this like 4 second video of his reaction supposed to show? He very well may have pouted but you can’t see anything in that short clip with his helmet on
I agree
Can’t a guy have a few minutes to cool off after getting benched
If he was happy and no big deal type attitude that would be bad IMO

There was nothing wrong with that reaction. He's got his mouthpiece in and we can't see if he was celebrating right before that or if he hyped his guy up after. What a dumb article trying to generate clicks.

You can’t seriously be comparing below average position players hitting to pitchers hitting can you
Not directly but the principle’s the same. Orders are built around hitters’ abilities, some players are more of a liability than others, and the pitcher is typically the glaring weak link, but also the least interchangeable player on defense. That’s part of the fun, it makes for interesting in-game strategic calls.

Last night in the 3rd the Dodgers had the bases loaded with 2 outs, Taylor up and Buehler on deck. Three batters had walked that inning by two different pitchers. If Taylor had walked too, would Roberts have pulled Buehler, who’d been throwing well, in the 3rd? Would have been interesting if Taylor hadn’t gotten out. Love that stuff.

True about catchers, metrics are touching every part of the game. That’ll be even more the case with catchers when the electronic strike zone comes in; the prized skill of framing will go away all at once.
