Big Orange Hotline from Dead End BBQ with Bob Kesling, Pat Ryan, & Jeff Francis.
Pat Ryan’s assessment on the game last week – it seemed like everything we tried worked.
Jeff Francis assessment – It felt like it used to be around here.
Pat said he always believed Heupel would figure out how to score points this year even with all that we lost. Jeff said the thing that stands out most to him is the guys just having fun.
Everybody gushes on Theo Jackson. Pat said Theo is the man. He said Theo holds everyone together on defense.
They heap compliments on the defensive staff and both Pat & Jeff say they’re surprised that this defense is performing at such a high level considering some of the things they saw in the spring. The staff has done almost a miracle job in such a short time while being undermanned especially numbers wise on that side of the ball.
Then they pause and admit that they’re gooing all over the guys based on their performance last week and they don’t think the guys will get over confident but they remind us that we’re very thin in some position groups and injuries could put us in a bind.
Jeff says he thinks Hendon Hooker has had a big impact on this team. They think he brings a steady leadership to the team based on his experience. Both Pat and Jeff complimented his confidence – and patience since he didn’t get the start coming out of fall camp. They think he’s a great kid.
Ollie Lane makes an appearance and talks about how he had to learn how to go from playing in a triple option offense to playing in a pro offense but playing for Tennessee was a dream coming from a family of lifelong fans. He gave a shout out to Chance Hall when he was still here for helping him make this transition.
Caller calls in praising Ollie because he saw him play in high school and goes on to praise Hooker and Jeremy Banks. Jeff says he thinks the momentum building may lead to us beating someone this year that maybe we “weren’t supposed to.” He points to Ole Miss as a candidate. Pat says he doesn’t want people to forget that we have some of our own issues right now and we shouldn’t get too carried away with expectations. They both agree that this is becoming a fun team to watch.
Bob has the sideline reporter from South Carolina on for a pregame preview from the Gamecock side of things. They talked a bit about the leaders on the defense, one guy that is suspended due to targeting last week. They talked about some growing pains with the offense this year but think they’re making a little progress now that Doty is back from injury. They talk about the fumble, fumble, scoop and touchback play.
The guy says that the guys are playing hard and Beamer brings a lot of excitement. They talk about the fact that Clemson is making it a lot easier on the Gamecock program this year by not performing in their prior dominating way.
The guy tried to stay positive and thanked Bob & the guys for not being too mean to him but they all had a laugh at the end because without saying too much it was clear they all think South Carolina is in a bad place heading into the game Saturday. Bob even said, we’ve been there before.
They had a replay of Hooker’s postgame radio interview from last Saturday. Hooker said he was looking forward to coming home for the game in Neyland this weekend.
