Neyland Full Capacity Reduced?

According to Danny White, with the new projects to Neyland, it's looking like capacity may potentially dip below 100k.

Personally I have a lot of pride knowing that our stadium is one of the biggest in the country and I do feel like it's special to be over that 100,000 mark. I was at the oklahoma game in 2015 with 100k strong and I don't know if I've ever been in an environment like that.

I'd be curious as to everyone else's thoughts. How would you feel if Neyland was smaller than 100k?

Here's Danny's quote:
"One of the things I keep saying in our meetings, ” White said, I don’t want to be the person that determines how important being over or under 100,000 is. That’s going to be a topic of conversation as we engage in survey work and focus groups with football season-ticket holders.
“I’d like to know what our fans think about that. I need more analysis of what attendance looked like when we were good. We certainly don’t want to reduce too much and wish we had more seats when we get good again because we have every intention of doing that and competing for SEC and national championships."
“But there’s kind of a give and take there for the types of amenities we know fans want. The North end zone party deck and lower West club, there is seat reduction there. How much … is something we’ll be working on in coming months.’’

Quality over quantity.

I am old and as an old person I don’t care for flashing lights or canned music.
If I was 18 or 19 and only been to high school games, then I might be really awestruck by the atmosphere at Neyland with the flashing lights, etc..
So even though I don’t care for it, I am okay with it if the students like it.
I am not that old. The blaring music sucks out loud. You lose the traditional feel of being a big time place for a college football game when you do that,

I’m going to have to make my avatar Cleburne now because of you hahah. But I agree one hundred percent the music sucks I remember when we used to not do that crap. I’m only 26 though sometimes I probably sound like the numbers should be reversed

It's tough to criticize without sounding like you're 80, but I agree. I'm all for a lively environment, but filling every second with piped in music is annoying as hell. Pregame especially, there are times when you have no hope of having a conversation.

I think the capacity arms race is long since over. We are what, number 5 right now? There is nothing magical about the 100k number. Make it more affordable, comfortable, and kill the generic DJ music. Anyone can hit play on Don't Stop Believing. Not everyone has a band like The Pride of the Southland.

There's room for both, but they have clearly swung too far away from the band.

You can get a full season ticket for as little as $300. How much cheaper do you expect it to be?

I don't think I ever said that there wouldn't be cheap seats out there, and their press release said that "most" season ticket holders would see a reduction in cost.

My overall point is that in order to institute this plan, they are also increasing the cost on MANY people that have held season tickets in their family for generations (which seems like an odd move at a time when long time fans are beaten down pretty badly), while also turning a lot of seats that people have had for decades into club level seats that will cost exorbitant sums.

Now, I don't know that there's a better system, because this all dovetails with the renovations, but some people's seats have increased by like 400%.

I was at the 1991 game in South Bend. Crowd roared like Neyland in first half. Not so much in the 2nd half as the Vols mounted the comeback
They used to be loud as hell. I remember watching old games from 80s and early 90s. Then they started the gentrification process and killed their passion and atmosphere because everything became about money. Fans became customers instead of supporters, it became transactional. That’s why Georgia and Nebraska literally out numbered ND fans in their own damn building

What will Sterling Hinton do without that job? Think of a VFL and don't be selfish.

Drop it to 90ish. Give us a little more room for the ole hiney. Focus on making it the nicest while still retaining max potential fan noise. And I don’t just mean nicer for the corporate crowd. Focus more on Average Joe’s experience.

The grandfathering of seats has been going on for 35 years. How much longer was it supposed last, forever? What about the person donating $2500 a seat every year who sits next to a grandfathered season ticket holder who gives nothing?

Now every one pays the same (with the exception of university employees who get a 20% discount), that seems more fair.

Sorry but if an undefeated UT is playing an undefeated Alabama on the 3rd Saturday of October and my option is at the top of HH vs watching at home in High Def, I'm watching at home. It most certainly doesn't make me any less of a fan either

If we've got a shot at beating Alabama... I would hang on a rope in a harness under the Goodyear blimp to watch just to be there if need be !!!

It's certainly more egalitarian. I don't think we disagree to be honest, but I guess my ultimate point is that while "a majority of season ticket holders" might see a reduction in ticket costs, a whole lot of people's tickets will also be going up.

Man they are going more to the party atmosphere that NFL has adopted in recent years. With the beer sales already in place they’re not selling the game as much as they are the atmosphere around the game. Hence the addition of the party Terrace for the common folks, and more sky boxes for the big money crowd.

Exactly! So f'ing what if the stadium drops down to 75-80000? I remember it being plenty loud enough in the early 70s when the capacity was 72,000
I agree. I saw lots of games in the late 60s and 70s and my ears would ring. 75-80k people can make a hell of a lot of noise when they want.
I want seats with backs. My back can’t take sitting on a bleacher for 4 hours.

That's a brilliant response. I believe if UK can downsize their BB arena we could downsize our stadium. They have won a few more NCs in basketball than we have in football.

I don’t give sh!t what they do and if they ever win another game in anything they play
