Heupel will figure out the QB position

Let's revisit after Pitt.
Do you think a guy completing less than 50% of his passes can win in this league ? I do not.
That’s literally my argument give him two or three games then make a determination on him but rooting against him is ridiculous…

That still doesn't excuse demonstrably sub-par QB play from a guy in his 4th year of college football, hand-picked by a coach whose forte is supposed to be QB evaluation and development.
Are you really judging the HC and the QB on their first real game… pretty harsh of a fan you are

Don't act like Heupel got to go out and choose from every qb on the planet. When he got here he was gifted BM HB and HH. He wasn't pleased with the position and grabbed JM in the portal. JM may have been the best possible player available in the portal at the time. If he is the best on our roster you can't really fault CJH for that. He hasn't been here long enough.

Heupel is not a first time HC, and Milton is not some true freshman thrown into his first game.

Solid QB play is an expectation under Heupel, especially against such an overmatched opponent as Bowling Green.

Being critical of him isn't rooting against him. I hope he does a complete 180 and wins the Heisman trophy. Doesn't make it likely. Unfortunately his performance as he is the starter effects the team I have rooted for my entire life

Will you eat crow if he has a great performance against Pitt?

He had 3 QBs on the roster, and decided to recruit Milton from the portal, in spite of lackluster play at Michigan. No one made him do it, that was his choice, and then he named him starter, also his choice.

Why are you trying to absolve Heupel from a situation that is 100% of his own making?

Heupel is a first time coach at UT and this is a new offense to everybody on the team including Milton is my point BeardedVol

Also let me be clear. I think Heupel will get it right. I'm not down on that guy. But I do think he's asking himself and other coaches in those rooms some serious questions about the future.

New offense...you say that like Milton was asked to go play midfielder for UT's soccer team.

He wasn't asked to do anything that he hasn't been doing at the very least the previous three years at Michigan, and to some extent his entire football career.

We're talking basic DI college QB skills here.

Because the three qbs on his roster weren't his fault. If they all suck and Milton is better then he did the only thing he could do. If Milton, Bailey, and hooker all three suck then I don't care who the coach is, he can only do so much. Heupel has proven to me he can evaluate and develop the position. Also I'm not necessarily defending heupel. He hasn't been here long enough to accurately critique his coaching in the sec. I have said in this thread we don't know how the qbs have looked in practice. I fully believe though even if Milton is the best in practice and continues to suck in games we will see a different guy. Maybe Milton has practiced exactly how he played Thursday night and the other 2 qbs have performed even worse. Unless you have seen practice you don't know the answer to that.

Before Bailey checks out? Bailey had a month to prove he was better than 3rd string and here we are and he’s still……wait for it…..3rd string
I have no reason to believe there was a real competition. I see two guys who were handpicked by coach appointed #1 and #2. Handpick #1 is stunningly weak as QB - and has a history of the same. Again, I see no evidence whatsoever that Milton is more talented. Neither do you if you are honest. Facts matter. The facts make a very strong case for Bailey.
Milton Senior year HS stats: 1317 yds. 10 TD's, 6 int, Completion rate = 48%, 146 YPG
Bailey Senior year HS stats: 4670 yds, 50 TD's, 10 int. Completion rate = 71%, 292 YPG

Lmao you think CJH handpicked HH over Bailey? He transferred here under Kevin Steele. Heupel had nothing to do with hooked coming here. He was gifted him.

Did you really just throw high school stats at me in an attempt to persuade me?

I don't have to answer that, because Heupel, the HC who is supposed to know QBs, answered that when he named Milton starter.

If you've watched any film of Milton at Michigan, you know that Thursday night was more of the same. That's not to say that he can't improve some during the season, but at the moment, he hasn't from his time at Michigan, and that level of play didn't cut it there, and it won't cut it here either with our schedule.

We may beat Pitt. It will take a better performance than Thursday. Florida will be the first real test. Until then I think we can say there is a lot to be desired at the QB position. I'm sure we will know where we stand between now and then. Until then my ranting will cease. So some positives on a high note. I really like the rb room. The OL looks better, not sure about the 3 sacks could be a combination of holding the ball to long and missed assignment. Receivers made some plays but also left a few on the field. Kick game looked solid. DL need to get more push but played their assignments well for the most part. LB not sure but Banks played well, not sure about the transfer kid. I'm sure he made a few plays but didn't stand out. DBs looked ok, Jackson played well and was everywhere. Time to step up and get better. We won which is the goal, but we have work to do.

I think we are arguing two different points here. I haven't said a word about Milton being a good qb in high school, at Michigan, or now at UT. I watched his college film and wasn't exactly impressed either. I don't know if any coach can make him a competent qb. I think we will soon find out.

It seems like you are trashing CJH ability to evaluate and coach the qb position. My argument is CJH hasn't been here long enough to trash his coaching. There were 3 qbs on the roster when he took the job, which was way later than most other coaches were hired. He went through spring and wasn't happy with what he had. Then he went to the portal and got the best guy available. That happened to be Milton. If Trevor Lawrence, cam Newton, or Joe burrow was in the portal and wanted to come to UT I doubt Milton would be here. Heupel is a victim of circumstance at this point. You can't tell me he "handpicked" Milton when there were limited options at the time. Now if Tayven Jackson is the starter in a couple years and can't play you have a valid argument.

I bring up his time at Michigan, because Heupel was aware of what he was getting, and he still said "no, the guys I have on the roster are not it, and I think Milton is", and what we saw Thursday, is not the level of play, that one expects from the QB that Josh Heupel plucks from the transfer portal to run his offense.
