Why Do We Still Not Know A QB? Concerning.

They don't want Bailey to bail before discovering whether Milton and Hooker become Guarantano in real game situations.
That's not likely a concern. Maurer made a stupid mistake. Bailey understands he's better off on the roster and practicing than taking a year off then trying to explain to his next team why he quit. It won't be a good look for Maurer that he quit because he was beaten out.

Also, Bailey has to know that a back up will get opportunities this year. If he shows out even in relief then his stock goes way up. He might be investing in a better gig.

It is also possible that, since Hooker and HB have different games and styles, opponent team might call for different style of offenses to be played against them.
Josh Heupel isn't going to abandon the tempo offense at any point this year. He's not going to "slow it down" or get under center or whatever for anything other than very specific circumstances.

He may change over time but he's not going to come into a program and be able to install 2 very different offensive styles of play in 10 months. That's not possible. Tempo...... he lives and dies by it.

I have a need to know. I want to place a bet on the game and I think it is more likely to cover the spread if qb x starts!!!

It is not a question of winning. JG could start and we would win.

All of this really doesn't matter. What does is how these guys handle the situation. I am 100% confident these guys know the plan. You don't build trust and belief when you can not be honest with the players themselves. Sure you might bs the media but a good coach is going to be honest. 1. Because his recruiting and future players watch and listen to these current players. 2. HS coaches and relationships with them go a long long way. JH does not seem like the type to lead a kid on. Now that said he may have asked for 1 of the QBs to not enter the portal right away and talked them into taking some coaching and developing through out the season and taking the transfer after the semester. Win for everyone.

I watched those youtubes of Milton someone posted of every (passing) snap. There was more good than bad there. The good that I saw was that he rolls through his progressions - something JG didn't do well. He does tend to throw the ball really hard, and he has a canon of an arm. He's not afraid to throw into tight coverage, which might be a problem. Also, he overthrew the receivers quite a bit. Good news is that the overthrows were long enough that it'd be almost like punting if intercepted.

Ainge says he brings more scramble to the equation than Bailey. It's the "Josh Dobbs" touch - he can beat you with his legs if he gets flushed out of the pocket.

However, I keep thinking about Harrison Bailey's blurb on the SID page of UT.

Finished his high school career with 11,716 passing yards to rank fourth in Georgia history and becoming one of just five Georgia players to surpass 10,000 career passing yards, joining Trevor Lawrence (13,902), Deshaun Watson (13,077), Jake Fromm (12,745) and K'Hari Lane (10,217) …

This, plus whatever he learned at the Manning passing academy this summer, plus working with someone besides Wienke on campus. Hopefully some of this will play out as well.

Why would they announce it? It’s to their advantage not to give the opponent anything, especially being a new staff to this program.

It’s not concerning at all. Keep the competition going and let the opponent have to prepare for multiple, different QBs.
A) why do you need to find an advantage over a 3-7 team?
B) why do you need to find an advantage over a BG team that is 3-14 over 2 years?

Do you think HB uses his redshirt this year?

If it looks like he's QB3 this year, even if Milton busts and Hooker steps in or Milton balls out and declares for the draft, next year HB might STILL be QB2 or even QB3 with Jackson in the mix.

Maybe Bailey was prepared, mentally, for this type of competition and backup role because he was potentially facing a battle with Salter this year anyway..... before Milton appeared.

Yes. Gives him a lot of options. He can still participate in up to 4 games and develop. If next year isn’t any more promising, then he can do his proper research with this extra time and find the right landing spot and instant eligibility for 4 seasons.

Not sure. I think it depends on how the season plays out. For all we know, he could be the starter by mid season.

True. But the new way of life is the portal. UT would have to pick up a 3rd QB.

I liked Salter as a recruit. But he was going to need at least a year to develop, learn the system, and fix some bad habits. Probably 2 years. The chances that he would have been recruited over IMO were greater than Bailey being recruited over. That's a statement on timing as much as talent. Bailey had a head start on Jackson. There's a good chance if he stuck it out that he would have started a year or two. I don't think Salter would have ended up ahead of Jackson in Jackson's 2nd year.

Just an opinion based on what little we've seen and know about those 3 guys.

For starters, I am usually optimistic and still am.

CJH said this morning that “they will announce a starter when they feel like they’ve (QB) earned it.

Why does UT never announce a QB until 10 mins before kickoff? It seems like we are the only team in CFB who never has a clear cut starter.
It never turns out good when we play this game. What is the secret? Are all 3 not that great and you’re just picking at this point? Concerning that at least 1 of the bunch hasn’t stood out.

I hope I am wrong, but it is never good when you don't know who is leading your team, 10 days before kickoff.

OP, we are Tennessee and you know we don’t show anything before the Florida game!

I've never agreed with letting your opponents know who is starting in advance. The same goes with high school football and all this film trading that goes on. Why in the world would you give your opponent any significant advantage?

Such a clownshoes argument. The NFL lets reporters watch all their practices, and what does it matter because after a game everyone will have film on you anyway. If you are a coach worth your salt, you should be able to beat your opponent by making adjustments regardless of what they know.

During the season, the NFL lets reporters watch part of their practice....not all.

I think he's still keeping the competition open but from what I have heard, Milton always goes with the ones and takes half the snaps in practice. TIFWIW

I keep getting some dopey version of this. Do you not realize we play a quality opponent Week 2 against Pitt? Why not make them prepare for all the QBs? They likely have a weak opening opponent as well, so why would CJH help curtail their video study and game prep?

So the starting QBa at the other 129 schools have been announced. Good detective work!

But didn't they get all the Weinke out if him? Man I didn't care for him...

I think they are trying to figure out who’s the backup QB without making just a “backup competition” . You try to perform your BEST when you are competing with 2 others instead of just 1 guy. Different mindset IMO
