Is there a breakdown of why Americans are even there at this point? I know some were directly employed by the government, but just curious to see who is actually needing rescue. This board talks a lot about personal responsibility in just about every other thread, but I don't recall anyone really mentioning why any Americans not directly employed by the government (so it is the government's job to get them out) were even still there.

I know there was the one story about people taking vacation to visit family as everything was falling apart and other of an Afghan interpreter going back because his family couldn't secure the visas.

Why were the rest of them still there to need rescuing? Because they knew we would have to get them out?

That is an overly simplistic view of this crap. Biden screwed up royally. Trump screwed up royally. Same for Obama and Bush. Everyone contributed to this mess. Trump released 5000 fighters plus the current leader in a peace accord that didn't include the Afghans. Obama and Bush gave billions of dollars in weaponry to the Afghan government in a nation building exercise that anyone with half a brain knew was destined for failure. This was always going to be a crappy outcome unless we stayed forever.
If you're the one to drop the baton in a relay race YOU LOST THE RACE. Bush, Obama and Trump might have been behind in the race, but they were still in the race, Biden lost the race barring a miraculous effort that neither he or his team appear to even want to ask for.

The only thing I know is the situation on the ground seems to be to let Americans and allies get out. After 31 August, all bets are off.

The terror seems to be centered around going after the locals who helped the Americans.
I expect they will play nice until we pull out, the violence we've seen this far will be nothing.

It’s deflection. Completely irrelevant to the cluster **** we’re seeing today. It hasn’t fallen apart for 20 years and would not have fallen apart if we had any sort of plan…..at all.

It is falling apart because of 20 years of stupid decisions. To suggest anything else is just being willfully blind.

Hard to fight a war with one arm tied behind your back. The sorry ass politicians work deals with contractors to extend as far as they can. A lot of them have blood on their hands and they don’t gaf.

I think something that is getting lost in all this is the fact that the chaos of the pullout is centered on getting Afghans out. The number of Americans at the airport isn't more than a few hundred. Americans and allies aren't being stopped, or shot at. The Taliban is honoring the 31 August date.

This was definitely bungled, but I'm struggling to see how this is the worst thing ever.
Our Afghan allies are getting killed. The Taliban is actively hunting Afghans that helped us and are executing them. I've not seen a report suggesting they're letting these people through safely.

You forgot about the feminist and gender studies teams. How much did the stimulus bill call out for them?

From direct first person accounts on the ground, this is what I'm hearing.

Afghanistan itself was always going to be a lost cause. If you want to spread the blame of the Taliban retaking control across multiple administrations, I'm fine with that. But the chaos and poor execution of withdrawing Americans and American forces falls squarely on Biden. He is the CiC. He is responsible for what is currently happening with getting our citizens and our allies out of that country. The blame for that is NOT shared by past administrations. It's HIS screw up. People need to stop deflecting and making excuses for him.

If we had evacuated civilians and allies first and kept troops on the ground, the sane thing to do, we would not be seeing the chaos we're seeing now.

Do you have any idea if they are venturing outside the embassy coumpound? I’d guess it’s peachy in there as they have their own power generation and water reserves also. But what about maybe 10km away from the embassy.
