Matt Campbell’s definition of “talent”

To tack onto your point, imagine Tennessee getting a Tajh Boyd...
🤔
GBO!!
His name was Josh Dobbs and we didn't do anything with his time here. Butch missed that window of opportunity, which everyone saw happen in real-time. Even brought in some great talent at other positions while riding that wave. Ultimately he blew it. Now someone else has to try to get back there and prove that they can take that next step

That’s what the total team talent roster ranking is for the 2016 season… it takes into account the previous recruiting classes. Averages out the players individual rankings and then spits out who has the better roster for that season Which is what I’ve been trying to explain. GBO!
Your angle was that to win championships you need to average top 10 classes…and they didn’t. Yes…GBO. 😏

15th in 2013, 16th in 2014, 9th in 2015 and 8th in 2016 averages out to 12. 2017 class ranked 17th by the way.
That’s the recruiting class ranking as a whole. Clempson takes in less players which pushes their recruiting classes down but their quality per player is there which is why 247 total team ranking ranked their roster 9th in the country for the 2016 season based on their previous commits up to that season. Check it out it’s called 247 total team talent rankings.. it’ll show you what season and what the roster is ranked by their composite rankings

Sure, after the fact. I’m not arguing that Clemson has recruited well, they hit on a whole lot more than they miss. From ‘13-‘16, I’m pretty sure Clemson had a couple of classes ranked in the 15-18 range.
However, I do see both sides of the argument. I’ve always thought it silly that a class of 25, 3 stars could be ranked higher than a class of 15, 4 stars.
GBO!!

Bottom line is their entire roster since they have started winning championships was ranked in the top 10… 79 players on their roster for the 2016 season was ranked 9th and they had good coaching. You can’t win national titles without Top 10 talent and good coaching
What you posted had 4 five stars, 35 four stars and 35 THREE stars. You bought em at face value for saying that means NINE…I don’t.

Then why did they have 35 three stars on the team?

Man I miss Dobbs! Did he ever have a QB coach the entire time he was on campus?🤦‍♂️
GBO!!

Before that? 2016 is when they won their first national championship. Their roster was ranked 9th which included every scholarship player on the team for that season… before that they obviously didn’t win a national title

Clemson won their first national championship in 1981 after beating Nebraska in the 1982 Orange Bowl and finishing with a 12-0 record.

I’m with you butchna, it’s easy to look back at Clemson’s classes leading up to that 16’ championship and say, oh well they were better than we thought so they must be ranked higher than we originally ranked them. I just don’t look at it like that. Their classes averaged outside of the top 10, plain and simple, I don’t care how anyone wants to spin it in 2021.
GBO!!

They must be pretty dang good if the ones that are competing for the national title are all usually Top 10 in average recruiting ranking per commit.. Can not win a national title without Top tier talent AND coaching

Okay. Since they’re so good at it and so many coaches are bad at it, you’d think they’d get into the far more lucrative profession of coaching.

Stoops at Kentucky has that mentality as well, I think. It's not a bad way to build a strong foundation, but you do have to switch into that higher gear to recruit and utilize better talent.

Right now, I would take 2-3 seasons of classes like that to build depth and culture. I'd rather have those classes than the star-chasing Butch Jones used to do, signing extra guys just because it looked good on signing day, but they didn't pan out.

Nailed it. Thank you.

Yeah I explained the Clemson situation last year sometime. During their run of prominence, they have ALWAYS had a good QB. QB led team. Unlike Bama, who just recently started that trend really.
Clemson did it with Elite QB play and solid defense.

That Walk-on WR who caught the game winning TD vs Bama (Renfro) was eventually drafted into the NFL.

And he's been very good for the Raiders.
Sure you can rank him as a 4 star NOW...but he was 2 star when he came to Clemson.
AND
if anybody that knew anything about football talent, saw Renfros high school tape, you were NOT surprised when he had success at Clemson. He was absolutely unstoppable as a wishbone QB.

Great article in The Athletic about having success without highly rated recruiting classes. Matt Campbell is the focus of the article, but also references Clemson, Oregon, and Michigan State.

It’s my hope that Heupel & staff will identify and develop talent that fits their system and culture, whether their recruits are 2*s or 5*s.

Feldman: Is Iowa State a College Football Playoff team? I'll take Matt Campbell over recruiting stars

Whatever! He has the luxury to say this because he plays in a weak conference. His team would...at BEST finish 3rd in an SEC division. I'd much rather take my chances with Clemson's roster than his.

I get it we all want UT to win the natty every year, it ain't happening this year though. But the sports desperately needs an Iowa State to come through and win the big one. Variety is desperately lacking. I hope elite coaching can overcome the talent advantage this year. Problem is these talent rich programs also have elite coaches as well. Main issue.
