For those who have watched his film, how often is Milton a runner? He seems like he's got the body to be really effective as a rusher.

Did Heupel rush qbs very often at UCF?
Not very often.

And

Not very often.

Don't think Hype runs many designed run plays, his QBs have typically ran about at league average or just above, while running a lot more plays overall. If I had to guess, his designed run play ratio isn't above average.

Milton ran 6 times/game last year. Not sure how many designed. For reference, Fields ran 10 times/game. Dobbs ran 11-12/game.

Joe Milton raised a lot of eyebrows on the day – and not just because of his physical make up. The newcomer displayed great mechanics, the quickest release and a really strong arm.

-Eric Cain
Quickest release AND really strong arm 👀

Good god it feels like we backed into a legit QB finally. Been a while since a QB has gotten such praise here.

Really excited to see how the QBs develop a under CJH. Both Butch and Pruitt emphasized minimizing mistakes. I think that is not a great mindset and was particularly bad for JG and Maurer. CJH seems to emphasize making plays, which is a more productive approach to offense and QB play, IMO.
100%

Butch and CJP also loved those misconstrued cliche bits of "analytics" such as "the team that wins the turnover battle wins 70% of the time". Somehow they took that to mean playing a turtling strategy would win you 70% of the games...when the actual data was based off teams just playing normally. Not to mention, turnovers are notoriously hard to control for.

Best to just go out and try to win, without being reckless. But trying to win by being ultra safe is a recipe for disaster. Same folks that call deep shots "50/50 balls" which absolutely no data supports, closer to the opposite.

Listen I'm excited to hear all the practice notes because it's getting close to game time, but we've heard the same shi* for the past 14 year.

JG was a monster in practice and Dobbs sucked in practice.
I actually hate the practice reports - gets my hopes up and they are always dashed.

every year.

I wish we didn't hear a peep and just started with game 1.

The practice heros never turn out.

Part of that is just bad coaches.

If CJH is running practices that have zero translation to the games, he will be gone in short order, too.

Truth. And by game 6 we're always "I'll never believe those practice reports again!" And here we are 😅

Tbf media will always talk about newcomers, because they're just more interesting to everyone than the 4th year rs-jr still battling for a spot, but locking it down slowly.

So a few good things are said about the newcomers (they'll get bashed for being negas if they don't) and then we take that to mean the new guys are going to crush the SEC. Happens every year...oh well it's entertaining and who knows, maybe a Barnett or Kamara is hidden in there 👀

Small sample size and all, but Velus Jones' footwork seems way out in front of the rest of the receivers. Wouldn't surprise me to see him end up All-SEC.
Geaux, are you still doing those magnificent edits for recruits? Can't recall seeing any of your work lately.

I really think that is so..I just hope he doesn't get practice and athletic talent blind.
Hard to get athletic blind imo. The athletic guys, like Dobbs, rarely get to showcase their elusiveness and improvisation abilities until the lights turn on. The whole process really favors the purest dropback guys.

If a PASSER (not running QB) can't PASS in practice, well I don't expect them to pass any better in games.

I think a guy like Dobbs was a classic non-practice guy his first 2 years because...well..he actually was a poor passer. If anything, a guy like Hooker or Maurer might get hurt by practice. Those are our 2 best runners/improv guys imo.

His style - the Briles style of practice - is the closest thing to real games you can come to. They go a hundred miles an hour, as one should practice any game.

Reps, reps, reps...study later. Exactly how the best poker and other game players get better as quickly as possible. Even more important in CFB with very limited time allowed in pads.

I relearn this every year. Everything you need to know about the team you learn on Saturdays in the fall.

And this time we're hoping we actually have coaches that can do something with the talent they have. We will have to wait until game time to find out. Meanwhile, it is nice to hear we have some talent despite the mass exodus of players and the doom of reporters.
