The WRASSLIN’ Thread

The guy on the left is a friend of mine. He was in the Army National Guard to get his start in broadcasting and we trained together. Haven’t seen each other in person in ages, but trade barbs and sports debate multiple times a week. He works as sports director at some station near Columbus, GA.

Starting a second show in September(?) will help
It'll be the 4th show of you count the 2 "dark" shows on youtube. A bloated roster helped kill WCW. I'm afraid moving Dynamite to TBS and starting a Friday show on TNT will turn one of them into WCW Thunder part 2. The whole once a quarter Dynamite on TNT thing is going to confuse people too. AEW does seem to be continuing to build momentum though. So we'll see.

Been saying it for a while AEW is WCW 2.0

That seems to be what they want to be. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as they don't over extend themselves. The whole "forbidden door" thing is certainly something new though. I've never seen so many promotions with together like that.

It's almost like a throwback to the "territories" days, which is a great thing for wrestling since you don't have to be in any of these regional territories to watch their product now. I remember the days of Continental Championship Wrestling and Florida Championship Wrestling and Georgia Championship Wrestling, etc. It was always a huge moment when a champion or someone of note from say Mid-South was "lent" to Georgia for a few weeks. Or when Flair would come in to face Bullet Bob Armstrong in Knoxville or Georgia, or Jerry Lawler in Memphis, or Bruiser Brody in Texas... It's a great time to be a wrestling fan for sure.

Why does getting a 2nd show make AEW WCW 2.0? The issue with WCW and Thunder was that Turner forced WCW to do Thunder with no extra money for the extra production and the fact that the top guys didn't have to work Thunder if they didn't want to.

They’ve got the money it’s a matter of ratings and maintaining those ratings. Regardless of how I feel about some of their wrestlers they’ve got talent they just need better writing and booking.

It’s not the second show it’s the number of bodies they’re bringing in. WCW brought in every live body that wasn’t WWE and had no way to showcase them. If AEW can create angles and matches to showcase them all they could really take a strong hold on the business

They have a lot of people but they kinda rotate them pretty well and have people in factions that keeps them on tv. There's people in WWE that never get on tv, they're just paid to sit home for months and months before being released. I still love WWE but I'm so tired of seeing the same people wrestle the same people every week. How long did we have Drew vs Bobby or Big E vs Apollo or Nakamura vs Corbin?

Elias and Ryker

The stuff I hate even more is when they would do this with tag teams, and just when you thought you couldn’t take anymore they’d have the individual members of the tag teams take turns wrestling each other in four more singles matches

Yep, that should be done before the big tag team match, just to give you a little taste of it.

I think AEW has put weeks if not months of time studying what WCW did well and what WCW did poorly. They also looked at what TNA did well and what TNA did poorly. Utilizing the good things while avoiding the bad things will make them successful. It's what is making them successful now, and it's what will make them sustain. WCW didn't like pushing their own guys except Goldberg, and even that was eventually fed to the NWO. As long as the people they bring in don't replace the people who have already gotten over on their own, AEW will succeed.

It doesn't. But it makes the roster more difficult to manage. WCW tried to do to much and ended up with more talent than they could afford. AEW may well manage it better. But the move to TBS for Dynamite with occasional shows on TNT is weird and Friday at 10 isn't exactly a good ratings slot for Rampage. They've got some head winds to deal with.
