Things I'm mad about today

Oh, wait! Are you talking about Katz at Lamar-Airways shopping center?

because if so, now you’re getting personal! View attachment 381370

I just picked an intersection in Orange Mound. There actually is a Walgreens there (I think).

Ive changed a tire at that same intersection at 1130 at night before. I could have made a NASCAR pit crew with my time changing that tire.

I never heard this area called Orange Mound as a kid, although I know it’s called this now, no idea why. My mother and uncle were born and raised on Tanglewood, two blocks off Lamar, just short of Waverly. The neighborhood was always called “Tanglewood and Lamar”, with a lot of pride. Lots of 2/1’s and 3/1’s. When we came to visit my grandmother, I’d go with kids in the neighborhood to Katz, 15 minutes away. We thought we were Hot Chit, running off the leash.

My mother and I went back in 2018, before her Big Fall, and visited her street. She was determined to visit her old house, and fortunately, the current owner, a sweet and gracious lady, was glad to oblige and invite her in. They traded stories about their times there, a white girl born in 1927 and a Black lady who bought the house with her preacher husband in 1984 after my grandmother died, and who was later widowed. The house and yard were immaculate, and the neighborhood seemed to be on its way back up.

Tanglewood had always been a nice blue-collar street, and these days, after a pretty rough period, it looks like it once again is. The only difference seems to be that the necks in those collars used to be white, and now, with a few exceptions, they’re Black.

I’m still shocked at the two massive missing oaks in the front yard and the azaleas underneath, but here’s a house that has sheltered only two families since 1923, which I think is pretty damned remarkable:

Orange Mound honestly has a reputation worse than its reality. The worse crime is further south closer to 240 and especially south of 240 into Hickory Hill area. Will say extreme SW Memphis and Frayser areas are much worse than O.M. now.

In the late 90s, early 00s, O.M. was probably the worse area in Memphis. That's no longer the case. The population of OM is older than the other areas and that leads to less crime.

I used to bike through Orange Mound without incident in the mid to late 80s.

We played a HS football playoff game at Melrose in 95. 10 mins after we got off the bus, we heard gunshots nearby. The kickoff for the game was delayed due to another nearby shooting. Yeah, we were shell shocked and was down 28-0 8 mins into the game.

Our coach actually called a fake punt inside our own 10 yard line on 4th and 30 in order to get the running clock started. I was the intended option on the play and I flopped and drew a P.I. call. Our coach was pissed. Ha ha.

How far did “Orange Mound” extend? I’m having a hard time getting a feel for this (the streets/rough boundaries.) There were some housing projects nearby, but north of Parkway, it was just neighborhoods, some going down, and some coming back up.

I do know that the Fairgrounds were close, and that made my summers pretty great! Oh, excuse me, “Libertyland.” 🙄 Lotsa terror on the Pippin!!

Typically, areas south of Southern between Airways (West Boundary) and Semmens (East Boundary) is considered Orange Mound. Lamar is considered the Southern border.
