As Vols fans we only seem to get two pieces of news “Bad News” and No News” well finally we received three, not one but three bits of “Good News” and I will try to outline why I think these three recent rulings can, if implemented well, help us climb back to the top of the College Football Mountain again quicker than we could have before these rulings

:

NCAA APPROVES ONE TIME TRANSFER RULE
This allows all players a one time transfer between colleges without sitting out a year in residence.

Why is this good news - Because we will able to trawl through the transfer portal to fill in gaps in our roster from the lack of success in recruiting (we have already shown our ability to do this with Caleb Tremblay and Juwan Mitchell) we can replace players who simply do not work out (Salter, JJ Johnson, Lawrence) or players who left others teams (Cade Mays). Now players do not need to sit out a season I believe this will be a major part of our recruiting pitch each year thus our team strength will become less dependent on signing day successes and failures.

SUPREME COURT RULES COLLEGES CAN PAY THEIR PLAYERS
Whilst this has been a long time coming or should I say a long time happening, this is a seismic shift in College Football. Players will be able to receive a basic salary, gifts such as cars and royalties for shirt sales or even for signing autographs.

Why is this good news - quite simply those who have more money and are prepared to spend it (Tennessee with its deep pocketed boosters and reputably in the top 10 richest colleges) will be able to compete to “buy” the best players. It will also level up the teams that were useless at paying players (us) and teams that were sneaky good at paying players (everybody else). Perhaps an unintended benefit of this will be that Colonel Sanders could become a Booster after all.

PROPOSAL THAT COLLEGE PLAYOFFS SHOULD BE INCREASED TO 12 TEAMS
This might take a few years to be implemented but the wind is definitely blowing towards an expanded playoff format. The proposed 12-team format would have the 6 highest ranked conference champions and 6 wildcards. Personally, I prefer 8 teams comprised of 5 Power five champions, a Group of 5 champion and 2 wild cards.

Why is this good news – The current system is a closed shop, this year you can bet that the four teams will come from Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Georgia. It will take a few years of success for another College to break into that club and all the Elite players know where they need to go if they wish to play for a National Championship. Now with 6 wildcards, 3 will probably go to the SEC, so effectively the SEC East will be represented by 2 or even 3 teams and the Vols, if “The Hype” can turn thinks around, can actually get to the playoffs or at least offer new recruits the chance of a play off place so they can “stay home” and still fulfill their play off ambitions.

FUTURE RECRUITING POLICY
Hopefully Danny White and Josh Heupel both embrace the above and early impressions are that they are living in the 21st Century. Unlike Mr. Pruitt who was so far in the past that he arrived at The Neyland Stadium in a DeLorean DMC12- Time Machine (look it up) and issued leather helmets and black shoes to the players, future recruiting can be like this.
Walter Nolen No 3 in the country, and an in-state player who is also keen on Tennessee – Walter you can come to the College of your heart, you will play years 1, 2 and 3 receive a comparable “salary” to other Universities, receive endorsements for all 3 years due national recognition you will get from playing (To`o to`o became an All-American Freshman due to playing time at Tennessee whilst if he had gone to Alabama or Georgia, he would have been buried in the depth chart). You also have a realistic chance at Tennessee of getting into the playoffs for a National Championship.

But if we do underachieve or implode, then after your freshman year, you can transfer to the College of your choice without missing a year (having already made money, see above) and at your new College, you would have not probably playing in your freshman year anyway, you can still play in your sophomore and junior years and even your senior year before leaving for the NFL. Its now a win win situation to come to Tennessee..

Please feel free to agree/disagree with the above

I honestly think all/most of these will work out to be a wash, meaning we break even. Though I do feel that you are spot on about the (possible at this point) playoff expansion. I do think we will be a player in the final teams chosen in 3-5 years. This NCAA SCOTUS decision is a wild card that I’m not sure about. We will have to be walking the straight and narrow for the foreseeable future, and I am positive that this factor will be manipulated to hell and back by everybody who is trying to get an advantage. We, on the other hand will be forced to take a wait and see approach until we are clear of all sanctions/probation. We will be behind the curve for awhile on this I’m afraid.

But, we only spend money on paying former coaches who no longer coach here!

I usually agree with nearly everything you say, HOWEVER this time I don't disagree with your view as I just disagree with all the changes but the expansion of playoffs. Your view on all but the playoff expansion is in line with every pro sport in his country.

The transfer portal and paying players (upfront now) will be the future of College sports like it or not. Be interesting to see how teams fall in line with these changes. I think the rich just keep getting richer.

Big Ben…well thought out position and I can see all those things coming to pass. I do “fear” all this “marketing” of collegiate sports will tear apart the fiber of college sports that we’ve all enjoyed for so long. Once this reached the SCOTUS, constitutionally speaking, there was only one right decision and they made it. Unfortunately the fallout of this decision may have an adverse effect to our beloved sports. Only time will tell really how all this will play out. But as an optimist I’m kind of pessimistic about this one. Cherrio me lad!

Many thanks Hbg, Tennessee Cowboy,Savannahfan and tennrich1, your comments make my efforts worthwhile.

I also agree with the comments that these major changes in our sport may not be good for it, but change always arrives in life like the tide always comes in, so we need to take advantage of the changes not resist them.

London, you can list all the changes you wish. But nothing the NCAA rule makers, Supreme Court, Playoff proposals, or recruiting changes thrown together will change Tennessee's biggest problem. All the things you listed fall into the category from outside the confines of the program. The real problem comes from within. Brain damaged administrators, and feuding boosters. Nobody can be the adult in the room with these type of knuckleheads pulling the proverbial strings. Replace those idiots with folks who have what is best for the program at heart rather than their own personal agendas that are always in conflict? We might be getting somewhere.

While much you list might have some small advantage to the current situation? It does diddily poo to address the major issues. But hey, Hope on.

You make a great point, or as we say in England "A pig in lipstick is still a pig" you are correct in describing the dysfunctionality of the program and this is why I have been incorrectly linking recruitment success with on field success thus Top 10 classes result in 3-7 records. However Tennessee have actually swept the stables clean this time (I`m enjoying my farmyard examples) and as short term painful it might look, getting rid of players who either do not buy into the new culture (Emerson) or are just a walking disaster (Salter), bringing in Danny White and a group of known associates who know and trust each other, gives us a chance to rid the bad culture what you correctly highlight.

Don't count on the sweep. The big money boosters did not get sent to their rooms without their supper. Had they been, the university would have given up a huge portion of their funding they have enjoyed for years. As to Danny White and his group of known associates? They are employees of the university, and the one hope we have is some of those boosters agreed to hire White, who then hired the known associates. The deciding factor will be how willing they will be to listen to White, and his ability to influence the feuding factions I spoke of. And the ideal hope is everyone finally gets along. You hope that will happen. I am cautiously optimistic, but not betting the house on it.

It rarely has anything to do with players. Yes, some brought in over the years probably do not buy into "culture", but the problems at Tennessee as to players culture have been in most cases relatively easy fixes. Where those cases snowball is a reflection of the cultural dysfunction among the powerful donors who's feuding has, in my opinion, indirectly led to much of the player problems. Poor leadership leading to poor following, and the efforts of many made redundant by the influence of a few. If the older folks cannot be adults, how can you expect the players to be?

Actually, the recruitment success SHOULD have led to on field success. Despite the lack of it, Tennessee still does one thing fairly well. We still have a significant number of players on NFL teams. However, if the on field success finally becomes a realistic expectation, the number of players on NFL rosters will have significant increases.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'll endorse this one.
Personally, I prefer 8 teams comprised of 5 Power five champions, a Group of 5 champion and 2 wild cards.

I also think Danny White will be on the leading edge of adapting to the changes you mentioned.

I'll also add that we can offer more playing time due Heupel's fast paced offense. More plays per game means more plays for more players.
