With them not being able to ever shake off these debts in bankruptcy, these guys are bein burdened with a financial decision that will linger with them for the rest of their life.

There are 18-21 year old killers that can even be released after 20-25 years.

Again you are saying a lot of stuff that makes sense but that doesn’t absolve them of their situation. As I tell younger engineers that inherit somebody else’s cock ups “it may not be your fault however make no mistake it is indeed now your problem”

But that isn’t rigorously correct. This is their fault and problem. You’re making a case to take the Feds to task in exploiting the stupidity of youth. I agree with that. Now how is it fixed without screwing over the people who paid back as agreed. It isn’t an easy issue.

Oh I’m sympathetic I was young and stupid once too. I am not sympathetic to the point of just letting them off Scott free however.

I’d think the most direct approach is to make the debt absolvable via bankruptcy. Then the kid has a choice on how bad they want out from under that debt.

I've always been highly against cancellation of student debt (even though I currently have a decent chunk), but I am becoming a lot more open to wiping the slate clean. Then afterwards, a complete reformation of higher education. Everyone pumps these 17-18 year olds up full of sunshine and rainbows, instills they HAVE to go to college, then when they get out they're screwed for decades and no one cares. Also the inflation of college tuition rose drastically higher than pay rates. My grandfather talks about how he worked as a cashier during summer breaks so he wouldn't have to take out loans. I worked 40 hours a week, took a full course load, and pinched every penny I had and could barely afford a garbage apartment. These universities are for profit period. Something needs to change.

Ok I hope I interpreted you correctly and you are agreeing with me, on principle at least? I realize the IRS will probably be the last entity of our federal government to cave in. But I don’t have to like the bastards abusing me a la Stockholm Syndrome

I am just playin catch up, without really catching up.

If we had a flat payroll tax and no deductions, we could just basically eliminate the IRS. Instead they are trying to open Pandora's Box and double down on wealth taxes.
