You're a cruise kinda fella. In your opinion, are balconies worth the extra coin if it is open ocean and not like an Alaskan cruise?

Q open to anyone with some deets.

100% worth the extra coin. Some of the best times we ever had on a cruise was just us sitting on our balcony watching the sunset or just watching the water go by.

Plus if ya gotta pee and the wife has the bathroom it gives you options.

Take a good look at the ship layout. I'm not sure if it's brand specific and I've forgotten which line we took last time - it's been several years, but not all balconies are the same. I think we were one level above the suites and our balcony was like twice the depth as the balconies on other levels (even larger than the suite balconies); you have to scour the deck plans once you select the ship.. Half of our balcony was covered by the balcony above and the outer half was exposed to decks above. Most balconies are pretty small. The really good ones are at the back of the ship, and they go first - and probably cost more.

Check the balconies on the C and D decks on this ship vs the other decks (use the link below). This is a smaller ship, and may have been the one we were on the last time we cruised.

That is helpful. Thank you. The one we're considering has a top forward section, kinda like your shared plans, that is adult only. Balcony on top should be secluded and free from overhead obstructions, right?

I'm not completely sure I'm following you. If the side is straight up and down, each balcony will be covered by the one above. If the deck steps out as you go down, then the balcony below will be exposed to the one above - no privacy. Ours was half covered and half not, and the suites (or mini suites) below ours were full exposed to our balcony. Hopefully that makes sense. I honestly didn't see much sunlight coming straight down - in fact, our balcony never really seemed to get full sunlight because of the ship's direction and clouds, so don't plan on it always being sunny. I'd love to try one of the rear facing cabins. One warning I read about the cabins facing forward is that at speed there is a problem with room doors if you have the balcony door open - somebody turns the handle and gets ejected down the hall because of the wind. Also because of projecting decks above, even private decks may not be completely private. See how the projections on the Riviera Deck project out beyond the balconies below. When you think you have a room picked out, do a search and see if there are comments about the room - there are websites almost dedicated to cruise ship rooms. Most rooms are pretty much OK.

I want to avoid the aft because of occasional diesel fumes.
I'm talking about the top one or two decks on the ship. Usually forward of midship. Those balconies should be good?
