Debated about posting this - but it seems appropriate based on what I have read from last night into this AM. Ignore if TL;dr.

My wife has two nephews who we thought would end up in the morgue they were so hooked on opiates and stuff. Start running with kids in HS who partied hard and it led to the addictions they seemingly could not kick for 15 years or so.

For one, the permanent loss of a child to the state's placement into the home of the baby momma's parents was not enough. He then hooked up and married an even worse user whose parents were raising her daughter from a previous relationship. They had two sons together and her parents ended up raising them after the relationship ended in divorce. The good part of this nephew was he was functioning in a well paying blue collar job when he could stay reasonably clean. When the divorce happened, something clicked. He started treating his parents with respect and began throwing himself into work. He took serious steps to rehab from the drugs. He hired an attorney to gain visitation rights to his kids. Through that process he met a female attorney who was single. They began dating some months later. Fast forward 4-5 years. The nephew is now 40, he is married to that attorney who is now a magistrate, she just had their child (her first - never married prior to this), he has received full custody of both of his other children from his ex. His current wife absolutely adores and adopted them. The ex continued her drug life so much that the state took away her parental rights. The children are now flourishing when they were getting in trouble at school and acting out previously. A nephew we thought destined for the morgue is a shining light to all around him and a heckuva dad, husband and son. His parents now burst with pride talking about how it all turned out. Redemption.

I could tell a different, but in some ways similar story of redemption about the other nephew, which included one of his ex wives dying of alcoholism before the age of 40 and endangering their child in the terrible conclusion to her life. But the redemption story happened with him as well. His 4 children from his first baby momma and subsequent wives are all doing great. One is now married with a good occupation and a child of her own. He is now married to a successful woman in the medical field who loves his children as her own and his career has taken off.

There is hope if we are willing to put in the work and have faith. It's not how you start, it's how you finish. Which is what we need to remember about the football program. Good times ahead.
My mantra when talking to family and friends has always been "As long as there is breath, there is hope"...but I am also a huge tough love advocate, enabling by loved ones provides a safety net that hinders the path to recovery.

Screw that Fulmer was the worst AD the program has ever had and he gave himself a nice retirement Package on his way out, he basically was a succubus for the program I don’t think he needs credit for “starting” something

Gave himself? UT paid him to come to terms. Confidentiality after termination agreements aren't free, you know. Many people would have demanded much more.

His intentions lean heavily on lining his own pockets and sticking with a coach who gave us major infractions all while meddling with game planning. He wasn’t an AD and he didn’t care about other sports other than football. He deserves no credit unless he starts giving money back into the program he so gladly took from…

Ok well I see you have no idea how this works. You notice those recruits we got in trouble for paying decided to go elsewhere like UGA or Bama? That's because they were paying them too. Fulmer knows what it takes to recruit the best players. You don't think he was doing the same thing when he coached? The problem was Pruitt being a terrible head coach and a headcase, not Fulmer.

Yep, Hamilton, too. While Hart had trouble hiring good coaches, he was brought in to do some dirty work that was kind of necessary at the time. The AD was financially not doing well.

100%. Hart was brought in to balance the books and do the dirty work of cutting expenses and folding the Lady Vols under the flagship. Basically, he was an eraser. He did what he was paid to do-- execute decisions made by those above him. Took the hit for it, too.

He only "gave" us heavy fractions because the school President turned us in to fire the football coach.

I am no fan of Jeremy Pruitt, that is known, but the story you're presenting isn't totally correct.

Why August? I was saying 7-5 a month ago and getting blasted for it. "Your expectations are too high".
My quote was to wait until August and inferred he would be higher than that. I don't think I blasted you, because 7-5 is where I am now also.

That's awesome! I know so many who are struggling. Among them is my husband. Y'all please keep him in your prayers. He really wants to quit drinking, but he is struggling.
Celebrate Recovery is a great way to begin. He will meet guys, just like him, in various stages of recovery and he will develop life long friendships. Recommend you go with him, we all need help in different ways.

Just laughable how people still defend Fulmer for getting that pension after the university said no to giving money to Pruitt, wasn’t Fulmer complicit in that too?

That is the one I have been pushing. But he is antisocial and totally self-reliant. Only thing he has not been able to conquer on his own. Been waiting on him to get desperate enough to work with others to try that. That's why the one Nick shared seemed like it might work.

Have to disagree. He also won our last NC as a head coach. If you can't at least see some of the stuff he did right and also consider what mess he inherited as AD, then you are clearly biased

Hopefully we surprise some people

Going by this, us vs Mizzou would be a coinflip on a neutral field. Though it's way too early, that seems about right. This would also suggest us as a 34-35 pt underdog to Bama 🤢🤮

It sucks to see those kinds of spreads for what feels like the hundredth time recently. So ready to see UF/UGA/Bama as real games again.

The only thing Fulmer did wrong is stick with Pruitt after a three win year.

But to be honest with you, I would rather be riding with Pruitt and Fulmer through this season, with no sanctions because we didn't turn ourselves in, than Heupel plus sanctions for the next three years.

If Pruitt were bad this year (2021), Fulmer would have moved on and I think we're more likely to hire a big named coach with no sanctions.

Obviously these decisions are not made in a vacuum.
