The Atlanta Braves - Hello darkness my old friend

Silver is the only commissioner of a major sport that is good at the business/promotion side of the sport. I don't think he's good only relative to the other commissioners; he's good on an absolute basis at it.

Roger I would say is mediocre at it, Bettman is below average, and Manfred is absolutely terrible.
But... what has he done?

Secured massive TV rights deals with ESPN/TNT. Was out in front (relative to other sports, not necessarily society at large) on tie-ins with gambling, which is a potentially huge future revenue stream. Presided over a virtually drama-free renegotiation of the CBA. Their COVID bubble idea worked perfectly. The collective value of NBA teams has exploded over the last few years, with much bigger % gains than teams in other sports.

Other than his China PR misstep, he's done a great job.

Half of the job of being commish is PR and keeping your fans and players happy while having your owners on good terms. He does it better than anyone since early 2000’s Tagliabue

What league doesn’t have a massive TV deal?

The NFL played every single game in their own stadiums. The MLB season was fine. The bubble execution is not a feather in his cap.

What sports franchises haven’t exploded in value?

He hasn’t done anything but “mishandle” the China “situation”

It’s not a situation or a misstep. It exposed him as an awful person and makes a mockery of all the other stuff the league tries to do from a SJ standpoint.

Nobody watches NBA games. The companies with the NBA TV deals are literally going out of business. Congrats on the Twitter engagement tho

Look at the rate of increase in the size of the NBA's TV deal relative to the NFL's or MLB's. It's impressive. The size of the NBA's deal relative to the ratings the NBA brings in is gargantuan. They robbed ESPN blind.

The NFL season began 6 months after the pandemic began, after a summer in which cases declined and gave them time to figure it out. In contrast, Manfred dicked around and almost blew a chance at having a season altogether, and there was a brief moment a few weeks into the season where multiple teams had outbreaks that put the season in serious doubt. The Orlando bubble was a great idea that a bunch of people, NBA media in particular, said at the time was a reckless idea that wouldn't work.

You didn't read the full sentence I read about gains in franchise value; the % gains in the franchise values of NBA teams relative to other professional sports teams is shocking. By a variety of metrics, the NBA is a much faster-growing league. They've all gone up - but the NBA's are outperforming in a bull market.

And FYI, I actually don't like the NBA. Like, at all. I might watch pieces of some Finals games, that's it. It isn't a defense of them as a league because I like the NBA. But their commissioner isn't a bad one. I guess you don't like Silver, or the NBA, or both, so by definition everything they do must be terrible.
