The Atlanta Braves

Morton finished 3rd in the Cy Young race in 2019 and has a 2.78 ERA in the last three postseasons. He’s a legit dude.
He's 37, and that 2019 season appears more like a flash in the pan than anything sustainable given his career. He's a 2-time All-Star in 13 years.

He is by no means some noodle arm warm body, but he was not brought in to help carry a rotation. If we need him to, then that's a problem.

He had a 3.26 FIP since 2016, he’s not a flash in the pan. He’s a legit #2 starter. He was definitely brought in to start playoff games and be good. He’s not 2017 RA Dickey and Bartolo Colon.

But you need 4 guys plus Soroka is coming of a devastating injury. What they want and what they get out of him may be two different things.
Well you need more than 3 and you can’t throw playoff games if you’re not throwing now.
You don't have to have 4, and they could use Morton as a swingman.

Soroka's setback is something that I'm kind of surprised our fanbase doesn't seem more worried about. That's a huge deal. I don't think we'll get much out of him this year, which means you do have to lean heavily on Morton/Smyly/whoever else now.

Who was the last team that had a three man rotation and made the World Series? The 2009 Yankees? You need four starters especially since the Braves are adamant about the young guys not starting on 3 days rest.

They weren’t brought in to be aces lol. Middle rotation guys who can pitch from April to October. 200 inning guys are a dying breed
We should have paid Wacha and Ray $10M combined and done something else this off-season then. Didn’t know we wanted 4.5 ERA innings eaters.

What were your Mike Soroka expectations this season?

Him to come back sometime in May and be a pretty good pitcher. Not 2019 level numbers, but good numbers. Achilles is a serious injury, but it also wasn't a elbow/shoulder injury.
Fair enough. I was hopeful for late April/early May as a fan but I can’t say having an arm issue ramping up after being off for a while is surprising. I don’t think you could prudently bank on anything from him for 2021 if you were AA.

Definitely not now, no. He hasn't even resumed throwing after the setback. IMO that was a very negative development, given the makeup of our rotation, and kind of surprised it hasn't discouraged more fans.

I think that the offense, which make no mistake has been awful so far, will come around. The lack of hitting is what people are focusing on so far, but if this team underachieves this year I think it'll be because of pitching.

The bullpen is a giant red flag. Melancon, Green and O'Day drove us crazy at times, but losing them along with Chris Martin being shutdown and Will Smith looking bad is pretty devasating.

+ Matzek + Minter having issues and not exactly looking like their 2020 selves as well.

Bryse Wilson and Kyle Wright can do what y’all say Morton and Smyly were brought here to do.

We’ll be watching the postseason on TV tho
Uh nah, doubt it. I’m pretty sure they both would have pitch counts.

We needed vets, all our rotation options were young guys who shouldn’t be pitching a full slate.
