So my son is now watching a YouTube channel of a guy who works at Subway. Literally every episode is a head mounted camera watching him assemble sub sandwiches as he just talks about whatever.

Just saw a video uploaded 3 days ago had 1.1 million views.

I never thought I’d be one of those old people who doesn’t get the world anymore, but I think I’m firmly there
Sort of like Twitch, where kids watch others playing a game, so they can become a better player, I suppose.

In this case, just how good of a sandwich is your kid trying to make??

Defense –

I’ve been trying to find out what kind of defense Tim Banks ran when he was last a DC. It turns out he apparently was running a 4-2-5, at least at Illinois, his last time calling the shots by himself. This snippet is from an August 2014 article on Bank's defense at Illinois:

In 2009 Banks, working as the DC for Butch at CMU, had the 17th best scoring defense in the nation, went 10-2 in the regular season, 8-0 in conference play, beat Ohio is the conference championship game, and beat Troy in their bowl game to finish at 12-2. Their 2 losses were at an 8-5 Arizona team and at an 8-5 Boston College team.

Meanwhile in 2009 Brian Kelly at Cincinnati runs the table, resigns at the end of the regular season to take the Notre Dame job, abandoning his 4th ranked Bearcats as they head off to face #5 Florida in the Sugar Bowl, Tim Tebow’s final college game. Florida blows them off the field 51-24. The Bearcat defense that year ranked 61st in the nation for rushing, 78 for passing, 67 for total, and 44 for scoring.

2010 would be a transition year at Cincinnati as Butch and Tim take over from Kelly. Only 5 starters would return from Kelly’s defense, a unit that had been pushed around quite a bit in Kelly’s setup year for the Notre Dame job. There was a bit of a drop off but not as much as one might expect. They only won 4 games in 2010 with Butch’s offense only managing 25 ppg in conference play and Tim’s defense giving up 28.

In 2011 Tyler Bray, Justin Hunter, and Da’Rick Rogers torched their defense in a 45-23 thrashing at Neyland Stadium. Still, the Bearcats would bounce back and finish the regular season at 9-3 earning a share of the Big East conference championship. They beat James Franklin’s Vandy team 31-24 in the Liberty Bowl. This was the year Dooley beat Franklin and that Video of Dooley and our guys celebrating in the locker room afterwards got out and pissed off Franklin to no end. The interesting thing about that 2011 season for the Bearcats is their offense hadn’t improved at all from their 25 ppg in conference play from the previous year – but their defense took a huge leap dropping from allowing 28 ppg down to 20 ppg. I’m giving the Bearcat’s share of the 2011 Big East Championship to Banks. jmo.

2011 was Ron Zook’s last year at Illinois. He was fired at the end of the season. Tim Beckman was hired from Toledo as his replacement and Beckman hired Tim Banks away from Butch Jones at Cincinnati as his new DC. Banks would be there until the end of 2015 when he departed for Penn State. Beckman had been fired for cause (player abuse scandal) prior to the 2015 season and the OC had been promoted to interim HC.

In 2011 Zook’s last defense ranked #26 in the nation for rushing, #3 in the nation for passing, #7 for total defense, and #15 for scoring defense.

While the 2011 unit lost some guys, some to the NFL, Bill Connelly’s preseason preview expected only a slight drop off in the Illini 2012 defense, Bank’s first year in charge of that side of the ball.

This is where I think strictly data guys mess up. Similar to MSU in 2019 after having lost 4 early round draft picks from their 2018 best in the nation defense, Illinois doesn’t have the sort of roster talent to be in a position to replace those guys. In fact, MSU was in a much better position in 2019 and they still fell from #1 to #73.

In 2012, Illinois fell from #7 in total defense to #54 but after 2012 they lost the rest of their key talent. It would take Banks until 2015 to find and develop some guys to rebuild their defense but he did do it, taking the Illini total defense from 112th best in 2014 to 30th best in his final year (2015).

I don’t believe you can go from 112th to top 30 based on luck. I think you have to know what you’re doing to pull that off, especially when you’re playing in a P5 conference and your roster talent is ranked 60th in the nation. jmo.

In 2021 as Tim returns to coordinating a defense of his own with us here at Tennessee he has a major riddle to solve. I think he’s got good talent and depth on the defensive line and a top notch coach. I think he has solid guys in the secondary though maybe a bit thin on depth and I like Willie. Last summer it looked like we were going to be stacked this year at linebacker with 15 guys in the room. Lewis (5-star) decommitted, Brooks (5-star) opted out of his LOI, To’o To’o (4-star), Crouch (4-star), and Peterson (4-star) are in the portal, French (4-star) and Willis (4-star) are suspended, and now Beasley (3-star) is under investigation. We’re down to 7 scholarship guys in the room.

Tim’s riddle: We have 2 linebacker coaches. Who do the linebacker coaches coach if there are no linebackers for the linebacker coaches to coach?
Great post as always.

The linebacker depth is worrying, as you've mentioned. You say we have 7 scholarship guys there, and the talent isn't overwhelming either. We're getting our longsnappers and walk-ons snaps at LB right now - a sign of what Banks thinks of the unit.
