Hypothetical QB room. You only get to pick 2 for this year

Maurer, Salter, Bailey, Hooker, Milton
Bailey, Hooker. Would be interesting to see what Maurer could do in this offense but his previous injuries/health is why I would go with Hooker. Salter is out since he is going to miss Spring practice and needs to grow up some.

I know, seems silly. But with Hype’s fast paced O it makes sense. Tracks their measurable and output each practice. I’m aware of it being used in college soccer. Players are inspired to outperform and coaches know when they are slacking. He wants the O to tire out the Opposing D and our D to not get exhausted due to quick change of possession and late game fatigue..
Sounds like Golden State’s approach also.

Heupel will make any two stars. I think Bailey has the tools to thrive and Hooker will be a change of pace , goal line option. Maurer looks like he finally got a girlfriend to make him a sammich so he could be a wildcard . I pray Salter made a youthful mistake and handles this punishment like a man.

I think if they, the dope players, are dismissed, the rules are set and every layer will now what to expect. I have no problem if all four of them are looking for another place to play. Need to set the standard now rather than later. Do it now and the players you really want will support the rest of the team and a huge problem is the future is already solved. Parents of the future recruits will breath a lot better and know their kids will be taught a few things about life.
Without any of us knowing the details, I don't think any of us know enough to make any kind of informed decision about this.

Milton and Hooker would both just be here for one season, but it could allow us to RS Salter & Maurer which would be huge I think. Hell if either is clearly better than Bailey it might allow us to RS him as well.

Hooker has 2 years of eligibility. COVID and what not.

It is a whole lot easier to play defense when you are not down by three scores constantly. If the offense is producing you bet the defense will be stoked to get stops.

Several years ago Bill Connelly identified what he called the 5 factors for winning football. They are explosiveness, efficiency, turnover margin, finishing drives, and field position.

I’ve previously posted efficiency rankings for a number of years (offense and defense) for a number of teams, including UT, UCF, and our regularly scheduled SEC opponents. We’ve not been all that consistent with efficiency on either side of the ball – but we have had a few years when we did decent. Those were the years where we won the most games.

I’ve also posted the drive finishing percentages for the UCF offense under Heupel. I didn’t post ours but I assume intuitively that it’s not been that good, particularly in the past 3 years.

I don’t have field position yet but in looking at turnover margin during the Heupel years, UCF was at the top of their conference all three years with a significantly positive turnover margin. We haven’t had a positive turnover margin against SEC opponents in any year since 2009.

That leaves the remaining factor of explosiveness. I looked at the number of plays per game that gained over 10 yards and used that as my measure. The comparison is for 3 years (2018, 19, & 20) and looks at UCF, UT, UA, UF, & UGA.

Heupel will probably score a lot of points but it may be Tim Banks who wins those extra games for us. jmo.

I think Florida's passing game could fall off the map this year so if we can contain their run game - and assuming our offense is clicking - in his first road game as a Vol, Heupel may have a shot to stroll into the swamp in September and bring home our first win there since 2003. jmo.

I just read the 247 article about the first practice. Man I’m all on board with Heupel. He’s as positive and well spoken and smart as Pruitt was negative and dumb. What a breath of fresh air! He’s pumping-up these kids and coaches at every opportunity. He’s critiques were fair and honest but always ended with a positive statement.

I’ve been in the business world for 25+ years. You learn to recognize great leaders. It’s how they carry themselves to folks inside the building and what they say to people on the outside. They project an energy and positivity that’s infectious. That’s true of any leader in any industry. This guy is a great leader.

These issues happen at all programs all the time and first time offenders are rarely dismissed. They do own their remorse for the situation and owe their coaches and teammates all the skin that is required.

Those that pay their penance will be welcomed back, likely in much better shape for all the running punishment administered. Punishment can exist without going the dismissal route. FYI, I was one of those student-athletes in my college career, and I'm thankful for my coach sticking by me, but there was most certainly a price to pay.
