Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

I have been reading and not posting as of late and this is what I have gathered:

Religion is a sticking point even on a sports thread.

Smoking dope is good or bad depending on your personal experience.

CJH has lost control and team building exercises are either great or useless.

Everybody that has gotten in trouble are from the Pruitts era.

Florida still sucks in every facet of life.

We will be lucky to have a recruiting class rated above Austin Peay.

LSU should be banned from the NCAA.

With our potential violation problems we should take the same stance as LSU with the NCAA and ignore them.

And ya'll wonder why I set in a corner with crayons and a coloring book and watch the little animals.........SQUIRREL.......what was I saying ....never mind.

People hate on Fulmer, but he championed the common fan experience. He was very attuned to keeping tickets affordable and hosting events for families so kids could experience and carry on UT traditions. He was the one focused on making sure stadium renos created a better experience for all fans. You'll see different reno plans now. They'll reduce capacity and make Neyland more of an entertainment venue.
I doubt they're just going to scrap all the reno plans that have been set.

This. They had a Jr Vol club back in the early 2000s that the kids had a dedicated day to mingle with players and coaches for half a day. We have a basement wall covered with pics of my boys with Fulmer, Ainge, Crompton, Trooper, and bunches of others. Fulmer made sure every kid had access to players and coaches and created lifetime fans. We had season tickets all during those years. That kind of care for the common fans is long gone.

I think one thing that is coming in the near future across the board from college to pros is going to be smaller stadiums that cater more to the people willing to pay a premium to attend. The Suites with all the bells and whistles will be the norm and the average fan will watching games from a bar of comfort of their own home for free instead of attending games because of TV. Years ago if you wanted to see every game you bought tickets got hotel rooms or planned a day trip now you just turn on the tube, it's all about convenience
and savings on up keep of facilities.

Except at home wont be free either. The development of these "plus" channels is going to create another level of TV access for games we are watching now as part of regular tv or streaming packages. Give it 2 years and they will move games you want to watch to the plus version of their channels.

It’s not just TN...it’s all schools across the country...you’re seeing the reduction of stadium capacity and adding more luxury suites. Disproportionately more of the money they are making is coming from TV contracts which is in part why boycotting games doesn’t do much. I think Cheek tried to turn us into an academic research institution.

Fulmer camp in summer for little kids was great. Jr had a blast every year.

They're not set. They've been looking at options and revising plans and scheduling for quite a while. Not everyone wants the same thing-- and now there are new voices in the mix.

I agree with that being long gone. The biggest difference in the two eras is who and what is driving the whole thing. Athletic Departments went from being ran by sportsmen that were all about the team and the fan to being led by marketing and finance people that are more focused on image and the bottom line. I'm not saying that has never been important but any time you hire people that's job is to come up with a different way to promote yourself that will make you more money you tend to get away from what got you there to begin with.

Commitment. Walking the walk instead of talking the talk.
Thanks. Commitment comes from leadership and that is the area UT has been seriously lacking (stating the obvious) since Dickey retired. Hamilton was a bean counter and only cared about bottom line, Hart was a gump who would not upset Birmingham and we all know the failings of Currie & Fulmer. Will be interesting to see how DW works out because it seems the AD and admin are going in the same direction, just hope it they are not satisfied with the current status quo.

That sucks, never getting to experience Neyland at 102455 after a big night game win that matters makes me sad.

This is true. Upgrading seating options, adding chairbacks, premium seating, indoor/outdoor and mixed-use areas are all things UT continues to explore. Some people were against reducing capacity to accommodate value-added options, but the holdouts are dwindling. The South endzone could be completely revamped. TV money is already earmarked for renos, so it doesn't have to be donor-driven or self-funding.

Maybe he shoulda mentioned this instead of ‘Recruiting’ as a positive at his final press conference

I don’t call cramming fans in like sardines, on a narrow bleacher a fan-centric idea. It’s a money grab.

Fewer eyeballs. More dollars. When the bottom line is king, it doesn't matter how you boost it.
