Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

As a fan for 50+ years, my top 5 would be as follows: Bernard King, Dale Ellis, Allan Houston, Reggie Johnson and Ernie Grunfeld
Agree, but Tony White is my guy (ahead of Isiah, because he's a VFL) and although he didn't have the pro career of the others, he's number 2 for me. I would also throw in Lofton, Slay and Grant

I'm not the one that said the game passed him by, I remember that and Florida. Did DeVoe coach David Robinson, I don't remember ?

I wasn’t suggesting that you implied that just saying he went on to have success elsewhere. And no he didn’t not.

The firing of Devoe and hiring of Houston: dumpster fire

The transition of O’Neill to Green: dumpster fire

The tenure of Green: 4 underachieving years of 20s... dumpster fire

Buzz: dumpster fire

Bruce: ended in a dumpster fire

Transition to Bruce’s replacement: dumpster fire

ButterBean Donnie: dumpster fire
The transition from O'Neil to Green was anything but a dumpster fire. Green made the NCAA in his first year. Buzz had a solid base of talent yet couldn't coach his way out of a paper sack

Lofton and White come off the bench on the all-time team. Sorry, not Slay.

DeVoe might have been the best pure coach we've ever had at UT. Many people will say his recruiting wasn't that great, but it was more about his lack of adaptation to the modern game that ended his reign. His recruiting was fine. He got Dale Ellis here, who most long time fans consider the second best player in Vol history
True.
Dale Ellis and Willie Burton actually visited our middle school and put on a dunking exhibition when I was a kid.
I think DeVoe struggled a bit with the shot clocks impact on the college game.

Green was about the 8th choice and KO was on the phone with every candidate trashing Dickey. That transition was a 5 alarm dumpster fire.

If Barnes can keep beating Kentucky once a year, he can stay as long as he wants. Beating Kentucky in basketball once a year is almost equivalent to the football team beating Alabama every other year. If we had a football coach doing that, he would stay as long as he wanted. Bc if you’re beating Alabama pretty regularly, it typically means you have a darn good team and are taking care of business. Same with the basketball team beating Kentucky. If we are beating them at least once a year, the program is in pretty good shape.

And Rick Barnes is doing just fine in that department. 4th nationally in 2019-2020 when we had a mediocre year. Had 15,551 season tickets sold, which is bigger than the overall average attendance of all but 11 D1 schools.

I just looked it up and did not realize that UT led the nation in combined attendance for men's and women's basketball in 2019-2020.
You will never see Barnes fired or “pushed out” at the University of Tennessee. Sorry to those that want to see it.

Btw, I thought DeVoe was a damn good coach, too. Bobby Knight disciple and I like Knight (Isiah Thomas was my guy). Hell, u could almost say TBA is the house that DeVoe built and cost him, his job
Good coach, moderate recruiter. They were always going to be decent, but that was their ceiling. I liked the guy, but Navy was perfect for him. He kept his house off Northshore the whole time he coached at Navy.

He never adjusted to the shot clock. And that’s when it was at 45 seconds.

A few coaching adjustments along the Way might have helped this season. Barnes teams are easy for opposing coaches to prepare for. He basically plays one way on defense ( man to man, never zone) and our offense is a boring pass the ball around the perimeter and Jack up a bad shot with 3 seconds on the shot clock. I hate to continue saying it but the game has passed Barnes by due to his stubbornness.

It’s amazing how much he continues to win being so easy to prepare for and having the game pass him by
