Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

And then had maybe the biggest choke in Tennessee NCAAT history against UNC.

Tennessee went up 64-57 with 4:48 to play; and then wouldn't score again until 13.6 seconds left when Harris hit a 3 to cut it to 70-67. Tennessee would score another garbage bucket and lose 74-69.

Dumbass Green just watched it happen.

TN has fired or pushed out every basketball coach over the last 50 years. Maybe now, with a good one this close to the end of his career, would be a good time to try something different and let him orchestrate the eventual transition.
I don't disagree but if this season and last become the norm he will get pushed out. He is not is some place were he isn't accountable.

I don’t know why the high volume Barnes bashing posters can’t accept that. It’s defined by supply/demand and cost/benefit decisions. I think they just like to whine. When Barnes retires the program will be on a solid foundation. That alone is worth the money... TN’s history is dumpster fire after dumpster fire after dumpster fire.
No it's not - at least lately. Three coaches have led them to the Sweet 16 in a decades span. Hardly a dumpster fire.

So u won't be watching ? It almost sounds like u don't want Barnes and/or UT to make it that far, but naaahhhh, u are not the type to root against the Vols, just so u can be correct, right ?

Hope to be proven wrong—this year would be great—but history says I won’t be.

The firing of Devoe and hiring of Houston: dumpster fire

The transition of O’Neill to Green: dumpster fire

The tenure of Green: 4 underachieving years of 20s... dumpster fire

Buzz: dumpster fire

Bruce: ended in a dumpster fire

Transition to Bruce’s replacement: dumpster fire

ButterBean Donnie: dumpster fire

I'm not understanding the problems with Barnes' salary. Aren't a lot of you complaining big time free market/capitalists? Do you now hate it? Because what Barnes did is how it works.

He’d be about the 10th highest paid coach and dropping by now if it wasn’t for the pandemic putting a freeze on athletic department budgets. He timed his deal well. Jesus took the wheel for where the Deacon was driving.

Just something to be miserable about. I can stand Barnes' criticism, cause some of it is warranted and the excessive amount I expect. The salary stuff is so annoying though, reeks of people unhappy about their station in life and are envious (and also dont understand how economics and/or college athletics work)

By the same token one better earn his money or somebody else gets the five million. That's how capitalism works.

True, but a$$es in seats and concession sales contribute to such decisions.

And Rick Barnes is doing just fine in that department. 4th nationally in 2019-2020 when we had a mediocre year. Had 15,551 season tickets sold, which is bigger than the overall average attendance of all but 11 D1 schools.

I just looked it up and did not realize that UT led the nation in combined attendance for men's and women's basketball in 2019-2020.

Not arguing that. Just saying his bosses decisions are somewhat driven by fan behavior.

Yes, though I question how much in today's world it matters. I certainly don't think it's as much as even 20 years ago.

It’s another reason why the university paid Barnes another 1.2 million when UCLA called. There is almost always a correlation between wins-losses and people in the seats.

Agree.
Letting Barnes go to UCLA at that point would've been a disastrous PR loss for the program. We would've hired another up-and-comer and UCLA would be winning and we'd all be whining.
If, and it's a big IF, Barnes' tenure continues to play out as it did at Texas (talented teams that didn't advance very far in the tourney), then at some point the same momentum that ran DeVoe out of town will start building, imo.

DeVoe might have been the best pure coach we've ever had at UT. Many people will say his recruiting wasn't that great, but it was more about his lack of adaptation to the modern game that ended his reign. His recruiting was fine. He got Dale Ellis here, who most long time fans consider the second best player in Vol history

I would put Ellis top 5. Probably top 3, that I have seen play. Never saw Bernie or Ernie at UT, although I do remember Reggie Johnson's senior year with Ellis.

As a fan for 50+ years, my top 5 would be as follows: Bernard King, Dale Ellis, Allan Houston, Reggie Johnson and Ernie Grunfeld

Btw, I thought DeVoe was a damn good coach, too. Bobby Knight disciple and I like Knight (Isiah Thomas was my guy). Hell, u could almost say TBA is the house that DeVoe built and cost him, his job
