Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

Oates wouldn’t but Pearl would crawl through broken glass to get to Knoxville again.
Bammers don't give a crap about roundball and, if I'm not mistaken, White has an Oates connection. We could easily get him, Bammer will never ante up bigger money for him - their bank account, first born children, and souls go to Darth Midget.

Getting the ball into the front court and calling a quick time out to set up an inbounds play from there is a common strategy with a possible higher probability for converting. With a true point guard, going coast-to-coast looking for a foul is a common strategy.

I'm not arguing the strategy. In fact I defended it just a couple posts above.

Im saying the execution of that strategy directly out of a timeout was atrocious.

Surely you're not disagreeing.

Seriously? Because I am critical of the job Rick Barnes is doing as a BB coach, you think I “ hate” him? You must be a real snowflake if you think criticism about a persons job performance = hate. I actually like CRB as a person, I just do not think the job he has done here warrants a $5M a year salary. No hate at all.
No snowflake here. Who in their right mind wouldn't play the market for more money. He could have sat back and made up a big lie as to the whole reason for staying (I know one that probably would have). There is more comes with the price we pay, one big one being integrity. Kind of nice not waking up to headlines of gun charges, drug charges, failed drug test, NCAA violations. OH I forgot, he got hit up for giving money out of his own pocket to an assistant to help supplement the said assistants pay. Don't get me wrong, Bruce made UT basketball exciting, but oh the price the University had to eventually pay. Because of the excitement, I have been a season ticket holder since. Just tired of hearing the same narrative over, and over, and over, and over...............................

What makes anyone think Oats would make a lateral move from Bama to UT?
This is the only year this decade that Bammer has been better than UT. The Vols' basketball program is WAY better than the Tahd. Oates would be foolish not to consider playing in TBA instead of Coleman Landfill.

Bama competes in everything. Even Gymnastics. Doug Dickey isn’t their AD, they’ll attempt to stay on top in basketball.

I don’t think that I’ve commented on the execution other than saying Pons maybe needed a butt chewing. It’s the NCAA, not the NBA. Mistakes are common with every team.

Actually I did say that play and the late shot clock violation were execution fails.

UT and Bama are almost dead even in both all-time wins and tournament accomplishments. There is no metric that makes the UT job clearly better than Bama. Certainly not enough for a coach to jump from Bama to UT. We don’t even fill TBA consistently anyway

Bama is swimming in money because of Saban. They could easily match any offer another school makes to Oats. The only SEC job he’d leave Bama for is Kentucky.

And none of that has anything to do with where the two programs stand today and how one coach makes less than half of other.

Oh...but you just want to bring it up as a "fun fact for the day?" Got it.

Hamilton's age and prior coaching record have everything to do with his salary.

FSU can get away with paying less to Hamilton because no one is trying to hire him away at his age. We paid Barnes the $5M because a blue blood was about to pay him that and the AD/boosters decided they would rather keep him than have to go through yet another coaching search. It doesn’t mean they expect us to be a top 3 program every year. That’s impossible anyway. Even the blue bloods can’t do that.

If TN does anything well it’s overpaying coaches. Pearl is the only guy in recent history I can think of that might’ve been underpaid.

And yet...except for Barnes, no recent football or basketball coaches at UT were in the top half of the SEC in pay. Jeremy Pruitt was 10th in pay in the SEC, Butch Jones was 9th in pay in the SEC in 2016, and Derek Dooley was not high in the conference. Donnie Tyndall and Cuonzo Martin were not paid in the top half of the SEC either.

UT doesn't overpay coaches. UT has just paid the wrong coaches.

It's a simple yet difficult concept.

We couldn’t “easily” get him considering Bama is very likely to give him a nice raise this off season.

Not to mention he has Bama headed in the right direction. Why leave?

Hilarious some people have reading comprehension issues. I didn’t say a word about wanting Hamilton over Barnes, but I do find it interesting that even with the extension Hamilton is set to make less than half of what Barnes does at UT.

Oh, and one of these two coaches has made two Sweet Sixteens and an Elite Eight while the other had made one Sweet Sixteen appearance over the last decade. Um. Wonder which is which?🤔
I wasn't referring to you. Others have stated it

I don’t know why the high volume Barnes bashing posters can’t accept that. It’s defined by supply/demand and cost/benefit decisions. I think they just like to whine. When Barnes retires the program will be on a solid foundation. That alone is worth the money... TN’s history is dumpster fire after dumpster fire after dumpster fire.

Why was that so difficult to say this time around then? I don't understand why you kept tip toeing around the subject.

When Tennessee is doing well, which is presently the case just as it was under Pearl, the Vols routinely rank in the top five for attendance. Alabama, conversely, hasn't finished in the top twenty for attendance in the last 25+ years.

Aside from that, you're exactly right. I knew that the schools were rather comparable, despite really thinking that there'd be some kind of trump card that gave UT a clear advantage (aside from attendance and possibly money, though Alabama can clearly afford to match should they choose), but the all-time similarity is truly uncanny. I've never heard of Wimp Sanderson, but his run at Alabama is honestly a more impressive stretch than anything UT has in its back catalog. I'd say that UT post-Buzz has an edge, which is true, but if Nate Oats can build something big at Alabama then he'd have no reason to jump ship for a functionally-identical program.

As soon as you come to grips with the fact that coaches are paid a market value and not a price to production ratio value, the sooner you’ll stop worrying about his salary.

How many current NCAA coaches are “earning” their salary? Less than 1-2%, I’d imagine. You wouldn’t be any more satisfied with Rick Barnes if he was being paid the $2 million he was hired on, the $3.5 million he got with his first raise, or the $5 million he currently makes. The money is irrelevant to his performance. Almost every coach is overpaid. It is what it is.

I couldn’t stand Jeremy Pruitt. Thought he was an awful head coach. Never once did I complain about his salary or that he was overpaid. It doesn’t matter. He sucked and it didn’t matter how much we were paying him because the price tag doesn’t affect the results. You’re either pleased with the performance, or you aren’t.

Coach K is having a bad season at Duke and Calipari is having a down season at Kentucky so every coach has an occasional bad season.

So what you said is a lie. Barnes never said “the only reason I’m here”. Plus you completely leave out the context. He said how much he admired UCLA and that Coach Wooden touched his life. Apparently you aren’t able to understand.

He said if the buyout was paid he'd be most likely the coach at UCLA. Now that is a direct quote printed in several media outlets across the state. If you want to deny your boytoy didnt say that, fine. But that is the truth. I posted a quote that I recall Lamonte Turner, I believe, told the media when they returned for a team meeting after the UCLA deal went down. Since it wasnt direct, I probably shouldnt have used "" but it was said in one way or another and numerous stories on the web say the same thing.

Then Barnes went into damage control talking about how wooden meant so much to him but the stories from UCLA paints a picture of a guy who ACTUALLY agreed to a deal with them (UCLA says they agreed to pay the salary and the buyout but they withdrew their offer when Brother Rick attempted to up the price to what Tennessee countered) and then tried to hustle more money. Barnes then had to blame it on the buyout to save face. What was he gonna do, he sure couldnt tell the truth. The links are there. Look for them.

I’m still not seeing “ONLY reason” despite how many different ways you want to spin that lie. Not only that, the context is missing.

Why was that so difficult to say this time around then? I don't understand why you kept tip toeing around the subject.

I don’t know why it is so important for you. I don’t recall denying that players execute flawlessly. I think I’ve commented that Bailey tends to shoot TN out of games and I’d rather Pons take his offensive positioning to the paint.

It's not even coaches, most of the free market is like that. How man pro athletes are overpaid? Most of them. Either they meet expectations or they don't. And if they are underpaid the next contract talks they'll get paid.
now wait a minute most pros would tell you they play just for the love of the game. wink wink

Could make due with an $800,000 coach. Either he'll go 15-14 and 14-15 and be a good investment or he'll go 24-8 and someone willing to pay more can snatch him up and let us invest in the next one.
