Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

Here's the thing about Barnes: he has no relationships with individuals to get funds channeled to his recruits. The reason both Johnson and Springer came to UT was because of Barnes and his acumen as a coach. Johnson's mother and Springer's father both were great players. Johnson wasn't a scholarship student at Webb school. Springer's Dad Gary sent him to his high school. They wanted their kids to come play for Barnes because they knew it would be quality instruction and development. Not paying players has probably cost Barnes a couple of quality big men during his time here.

The instant gratification has set in with many in our fan base. We're lucky to have Barnes
No channel to funnel money?? Come on, man. Not saying the Deacon is funneling money, but the circuit provides plenty of opportunities to get money to kids.

Leonard Hamilton just signed contract extension with FSU for LESS THAN HALF what Rick Barnes makes annually coaching TN. Hamilton made an Elite Eight in 2017-2018 while Barnes last reached that rung of the tourney ladder during 2007-2008 season. Hilarious.
Deacon needs to get off his ass and start earning his check. Heck, at least draw up some decent baseline out of bounds plays. Otherwise, retire and get out of the way. No way he’s worth $5mm at this point.

It depends on what kind of money you're talking about. There's some real nuance on this subject. Neither Johnson nor Springer got a lump sum of cash to come play at UT

No one is calling Tallahassee trying to hire a 72-year-old FSU lifer, though. Tennessee had to overpay in an effort to retain Barnes, coming off arguably the greatest season in school history, and avoid a late start to a coaching search.

Hamilton is a great coach that could stabilize the program for 3-4 years but I think FSU is his last destination until he retires.

Barnes lost me when he said “only reason I’m here is UCLA wouldn’t pay my buyout”.

Little wonder some games our team doesn’t seem motivated.

Meh, most coaches treat college athletics as a business.

I agree with this. After seeing how LSU has managed the Will Wade ordeal, bowing down to the NCAA and firing Bruce Pearl was a gutless decision by Tennessee.

Pretty sure it had more to do with Pearl lying to his own administration. I was pissed at the time, but hindsight, I think that’s what happened.

Hamilton has coached almost the exact same number of years as Barnes and been to 10 NCAAT’s. Barnes has been to 24. It took Hamilton 7 years to make the tournament at FSU. Took him 9 years to win a NCAAT game. He probably would have been fired at UT within the first 6 years with those records.

The administration wasn’t completely truthful with him either. They knew the pictures existed but didn’t tell him.

Not sure we can take that as fact. But one would presume he lied to them first and made some people quite angry over it. While it’s UT basketball that we all love, put yourself in the shoes of a manager or supervisor when one of your employees lies to you as a third party is investigating your organization for wrongdoing. You will think twice aboit going to bat for that person. I’m not saying what they did was 100% correct, but the lack of trust puts you in a precarious situation. I do not believe they just chose to withhold any information from him because they wanted to.

Yeah he tried that with 4.3 seconds on the clock inbounding on the far end of the court. Then bitched at Pons because he didn't get the ball past mid count quick enough for his planned time out. What was RB expecting, 2 seconds to get a play in. What was the plan, a lob of a three point prayer?
How about you just let Johnson take it coast to cost for a bucket or foul?

4.3 or 4.8? I can’t remember.

That had to be a huge mistake by somebody. I can’t imagine using Fulk and Pons on the inbounds play to get the ball across mid court for a quick TO. Perhaps Barnes was upset with Pons for inbounding it to Fulk instead of a guard already sprinting down court. That play and TN getting a shot clock violation late define the recent execution failures.

You can draw up a good play, and get at 1 (mayeb 2) dribbles off in 2 seconds from a sideline out of bounds play that results in a good look.

The biggest issue with all that transpired there was we called a TO between the FTs to discuss what to do. I assume it was get the ball into the halfcourt quickly and call another TO. To have Pons and Fulky being the guys back there is inexcusable, especially after it would have seemingly been discussed 30 seconds prior. That's middle school level embarrassing in terms of execution.
