This is all so true that you almost sound ridiculous to some posters. Good stuff.People said the same thing about Tony Bennett, especially after he earned the infamous distinction of being the first coach in history to lose to a 16 seed. He’s the reigning national champion now. I reject the notion that someone can be a good coach in the regular season and a bad coach in the tournament. Good coaches are good coaches, period. There can be any number of reasons why teams go home earlier than expected in a one-and-done format. While I think March Madness is one of the most exciting times in sports, it’s honestly a terrible way to determine a champion. There’s a reason the NBA plays 7 game series in their playoffs. Because it makes it much more likely that you end up with the actual best team winning. There’s too much luck involved in basketball for a single elimination format to be an effective way of determining the best team.

Could definitely be an interesting discussion...Why one year? How about last year?
If I can have the final four and an SEC tournament, you bet your ass.
I often wonder how differently Pearl would be perceived as a coach today had that kid from New Mexico State that Auburn fouled at the buzzer not missed those two free throws. He was an 80% shooter and only needed to make one to send Auburn home in the first round.Could definitely be an interesting discussion...
Bruce Pearl @ Auburn 7 years:
Overall: 136-91 (59.9%)
Conference: 57-66 (46.3%)
NCAAT Appearances: 2 (R32 & F4)
Auburn under NCAA investigation awaiting penalties
Rick Barnes @ Tennessee 6 years:
Overall: 121-70 (63.4%)
Conference: 60-45 (57.1%)
NCAAT Appearances: 3 (R32, S16, TBD)
Barnes has him except for the F4 run, which to some is obviously worth the difference...Frank Martin also had a F4 run but SC fans are pretty over him.
That’s my issue (in a nutshell) with putting so much stock into tourney success rather than regular season, or overriding regular season. Obviously if you’ve made multiple E8 and F4 trips it’s not a coincidence, but a guy like Frank Martin made the F4...according to quite a few on this board that makes him better than Barnes, would we really want his last 7 years in comparison to Barnes?I often wonder how differently Pearl would be perceived as a coach today had that kid from New Mexico State that Auburn fouled at the buzzer not missed those two free throws. If you polled South Carolina fans asking if they would trade Martin for Barnes if they had the chance, I bet 90% would say yes. They are mentally checked out on him. They believe the F4 run was nothing but a fluke. That’s my issue (in a nutshell) with putting so much stock into tourney success rather than regular season, or overriding regular season. My thought is if you make the NCAAT pretty much every year even if you aren’t the best postseason coach you’ll catch a break every now and again and make a deep run...I like that better than going dancing 2/7 years and 1/7 years making a run, and as you said that’s not even a given, it requires some luck.
I’m sure Barnes would be cool with it if Danny White told him we were cutting his pay in half. He definitely wouldn’t go looking for another job or anything like that.Maybe I've missed something since there are only about 15 threads these past couple weeks about Barnes' value, but I don't recall
many people saying Barnes should be fired or he's not as good as someone else.
Many are posting that Barnes is not achieving what he is paid to achieve.
My position is that we keep Barnes, best coach we've had in a while, but I don't think he should be one of the top 3-5 paid coaches in the country.
His achievements do not merit top 5 pay. That is all I am saying.
