Yeah, it's very interesting.

I think they are trying to find a DC to cover up Heupel's weaknesses: the offense can be hit or miss, especially at this level, so you need a defensive coordinator that can plan for being on the field a long time. We know there is no real plan for that, you're just kinda screwed, but maybe it can be mitigated some.

And it appears we are targeting someone young who can recruit really well.

Edit: another thing to think about is that we just hired a mid major HC. Might want someone with steady SEC or P5 experience.

Imo you can recruit more depth at TN than Group of 5 that can allow success when paired with uptempo offense. The issue is how long will it take to have appropriate depth with pending sanctions. It may be why he is focused on recruiting more than play calling experience at least in the case of Washington.

As i type this I’m thinking this may be why the 3-3-5 seems to be the best pairing for ultra fast tempo offense. It is much easier to recruit depth in the back 7 that can play on field longer and not have the type of drop off in talent or effectiveness when tired than it is to load up on enough top end DL. Everyone is battling for the top DL but you can find a lot of steals at Lb and DB that get lost in the elite recruiting circles.

Cheap cost of living compared to employment opportunities and proximity to everywhere is why people live in Ohio. I'm going to get out soon.

I grew up there. Not far from you if you are in the Dayton area. Left for college and never looked back. Ended up returning to my family's roots in East TN.

This wasn't another opportunity for you to take another passive-aggressive shot at Heupels offense...which is weird as hell to me anyway.

I know and appreciate the fact that they went after some P-5 experience first..but those guys are all cowards that would rather stay in their cozy little cocoon for now...so find a hungry guy at a G-5 or lower school that has had to defend a lot of different type offenses, and has done it relatively well.

It's not just Vol fans. But the constant over reaction to every tiny thing is exhausting. I mean at halftime of every basketball game this place demands the best coach we've had in years be fired and replaced in the second half. Sometimes it's so bad i go look up the score and we're only winning by a little. Some people feel like every detail needs a reaction and every problem needs someone to blame. Doesn't just apply to Vols, or even just sports.
Doesn’t help that we’ve had how many coaching searches and staff overhauls in how short of a period of time.....

Recruiting experience is what Washington has over Mayo. If we are looking for a young leader to bring a winning culture to the defense, Mayo would be a good fit. Playing/Coaching for the Patriots and being a high draft pick from Tennessee makes me think he would be able to recruit well.
I'm convinced Mayo would be the #1 rated recruiter on 247 every cycle if he was a college coordinator.

Yeah well I love UT but if someone gave me a position upgrade, tripled my salary and gave me incentives.... sorry Tennessee I’m out.

Seems like not even massive raises can get good coaches here. Oh we always hire on the cheap and look where it got us. Yeah well we are opening up the checkbook and people are still saying nope.

Hopefully he makes a run at Tulsa DC. We would fall right into a home run. Might as well just bring Randy Shannon before you bring the guy that Miami just took play calling duties from.
I wondered last night if there might be some bad blood between Heupel and Gillespie from their UCF -Tulsa battles 🤔

I'm not saying there is, I am just wondering why he wouldn't at least talk to the guy. I don't think he would turn down the Tennessee DC job.
