He won't get a better deal. Any program better than Tennessee right now would be paying a mill at most for him, contract won't be as loaded and it won't be SEC. SEC recycles too much and most demand a sitting DC. Him not calling plays will drive his price and program quality down on one's in "better" situations. Tennessee is taking a risk on him too. Tennessees situation calls for the risk. LSUs, Bama, Florida, Tamu, Georgia, etc does not. He'd take a bigger risk turning it down than taking it imo.I could definitely get this point. Our program is in a very tough spot right now and it is going to be a pretty tough challenge. But if he comes in and is part of a solid turnaround his stock for not just DC but HC will be through the roof. So then here’s the options:
1. Stick around at OSU be in a comfy spot at a top 5 program. Possibly get a DC position at a “better” school/situation next year then depending how it turns out be an HC candidate in 3+ years. If this doesn’t turn out he is at least still Co-DC at OSU.
2. Take the UT job. Become a DC in what is seen as a very tough situation. Be a part of a turnaround in a challenging situation and be a high-profile HC candidate in 3 years. If it doesn’t turn out maybe you return to OSU start running it back.
UT is a high risk high reward situation but if he/JH pull it out he will have Charlie Strong/Kirby Smart type demand on the HC market.
I don't mean to be obtuse, but what makes you believe that last part?
I think you are correct, but I happen to believe and have heard that both Brown and Orlando were offered the job and turned it down.Lack of leaks and time frame. The only reason it's been over a week would be because CJH isn't rushing the hire.
Sure we can speculate who we think would or wouldn't want the job, but the truth of the matter is if they were willing to just hire someone throwing around a million + would land them a guy (if they were willing to make it -any- guy that said yes). But at this point it appears he's fully vetted 3 candidates and the first 2 didn't seem interested (both sitting DCs) so Washington appears to be the first candidate in the week+ process that actual paperwork got drawn up for.
I mean this is all me piecing together things, I could be completely wrong.
Was going to say this same thing! There isn't a better program coming after Al Washington next year. There may be a program in a better place, but that should be negated by the fact you're getting a shot in the SEC to be one of the top 10 highest paid DCs in the country to build your own brand from the ground up. Cause one thing he has here is a HC that will allow him to do that.
