Barnes and UT owns Cal and UK again

I counted that one, but may have missed another one. It was getting late counting those games.

Was it just one year that TN and KY did not play home-and-home? I’d have to look it up, but it seems like the Thompson-Boling game wasn’t played that year.

4x: 1977-1980
41x: 1981-2021
1x: 1993 SECT
46 games at Rupp

During the game, they put up a graphic that stated UK was something like 280-10 at Rupp Arena all time when leading by 10 points or more during the game. They now have 11 losses and 2 of them are the last 2 times Tennessee played them at Rupp.

That was the night of the blizzard. Kentucky beat Tennessee 101-40. It was Allan Houston's last game. It should have been Wade's as well.

By watching the game thread you would think UT lost by 20. I wish some "fans" would lose their internet connection.
Didn't even follow VN game thread, not wanting to endure the whining, "expertise", & negativity of those people. Instead I just endured the rancid, verbose, yelling of Vitale & his lame broadcast partner. Guess what? VOLS skin Cats again!

I remember it well as an 8th grader. We had just beaten them, too, in the regular season...might have been the last game of the season. Then they came out and demolished us.

I had also rented "The Pistol" (biopic of Pete Maravich) and watched it a dozen times during the week we were snowed in.

Was that the infamous Corey Allen play in that win?

LMAO...whatever gets you thru the day. At this point, would not surprise me if the next argument is "the players are just trying to cover for CRB's poor coaching"

Sad fact is there are those who are never happy unless they are constantly criticizing, and this guy works really hard at it.

I know some get upset when they perceive Barnes as laying the blame at the feet of the players rather than himself after losses. But he also does not toot his own horn after wins, preferring to direct the praise to his players

I think if I were a coach, I would model my media strategy after him. Just straight up honest. I’ve had this discussion with friends about his criticism of players. I think they know it’s tough love. He has great relationships with them, and they know his honesty is just him wanting them to get better.

Had Barnes not taken the reins off of Keon and our offense, this would have been an L. After watching this game, it’s obvious the only thing that has been holding this team back is the coach. Ive been wondering the last few weeks why we were playing such a methodical slow paced 1/2 court offense. You saw tonight that’s not where Keon and Springer can best utilize their talents.

I feel like we turned a corner in the 2nd half tonight. We found an identity on offense and milked it. Of course, I had a renewed sense of optimism a week ago against Kansas and we followed that up with the worst performance of the season. So maybe I'm just setting myself again....

If our freshmen are starting to find their groove, I like our odds of peaking in March. This team still has an opportunity to reach its full potential.

To be fair, coach is famous for pulling players after they make a dumb mistake. I understand the logic behind that, but it can make your players hesitant for fear of making a mistake. It’s not doing any favors for Fulkerson right now for sure.
With 12 minutes to go, though, coach basically decided it was go-for-broke time. Going 4 guard makes sense when you’ve got JJ as your best rebounder. And he didn’t reflexively pull anyone when they messed up.

Agreed...constructive criticism is always fair and needed but nonstop, obsessive criticisms by supposed fans, when the program is thriving on so many levels compared to when CRB arrived, leave one with few explanations for this odd behavior.

Being aggressive to put the defense on their heels is not mutually exclusive from taking care of the ball....basketball is all about controlled aggression and turnovers lose games (along with missed FTs as we have seen both in our losses). Agree CRB has a short leash for dumb turnovers (we could debate if it is too short...I would rather err on side of pulling to teach) but I have seen him keep players in before last night after committing a turnover when it was the right basketball play.

Part of Grant Ramey's article today on 247 puts Barnes and Kentucky into sharp perspective:

"No. 11 Tennessee’s rally from down 10 points in the second half to win 82-71 at Rupp Arena in Lexington Saturday night gave Barnes his eighth win over the Wildcats in 13 meetings dating back to February 2016. Before Barnes, Tennessee needed 32 games against Kentucky to win eight, dating back to February 1999."

That is north of a 60% winning percentage since Barnes got to Knoxville. He goes on:

"Before Barnes, the Vols had won only four times at Rupp Arena — 1977, 1979, 1999 and 2006. Tennessee has now won three times in its last four trips to Lexington. The only loss: When the team had been ranked No. 1 for a month and had won a school-record 19 straight games in 2019."

Yea, Barnes looks to me like he is doing his part. Nevertheless, at the same time he's been consistently accused by "fans" of being too old, too passive, too quiet, too spiritual, too selfish, not familiar with the modern game and, the real big one, overpaid. Ridiculous!

This is a great time to be a Vol basketball fan. Enjoy it while it lasts. It is not likely to last forever.

Grant Ramey’s comments should be used as a reply to every troll that posts a comment crying about CRB’s compensation.
