To understand Peyton Manning’s approach to his sports media career and its future, it is best to look at some old game film. Stepping up to the line of scrimmage, ol’ No. 18 would survey the defense, pointing here, nodding there, until he found the smallest advantage — and then he might audible.

“Omaha! Omaha!” he would famously scream.

On the eve of Manning officially being elected to the Hall of Fame on Saturday, his pre-snap thoroughness is the right analogy for his expanding life in media.

I think "what's next" is pretty apparent. Hell, the guy is into EVERYTHING. Endorsements alone fill a ton of his schedule. He's got a TV show which I wish I could watch, but I'm not paying anymore damned money for another channel sub. Damned blood sucking leeches but that's off topic. I think he'll continue doing that and likely become an owner at some point, but he's livin' the dream right now. Having a helluva lot of fun and becoming a billionaire by the time he's 50....if not sooner.

I think for the rest of our lives, Peyton will continue to be roughly what he is right now. A fella we glance occasionally out of the corner of our eyes, on a commercial or briefly in the news for something charitable, deeply busy in his own life with various business ventures, but never again in the forefront of ours.

He won't be a coach, at any level. He won't be a talking head on ESPN. He won't be the star of any movie, though he may have several cameos as the years go along.

He'll be super-busy, but we won't see the vast majority of it. It will happen "behind the scenes" of our own busy lives.

I'm good with all that. Peyton's special to us for his time as a quarterback, plus that one SNL skit where he drilled the kid. He may add a few more funny skits and commercials to keep it fresh, but this is who he is to us. Forever.

Go Vols!

Ownership. Guys like Peyton put on suit and have titles. And if you ever thought Peyton was going to coach here or ever you need a common sense check.

Thinking of the dozens of reasons he would never want to coach this dumpster fire known as the Tennessee Vols.

Can you possibly be more of a Debbie Downer than this? I think not. This is our "State" university and it is tough on the soul to watch people outside our circle kick us in the teeth, but one of our own should try to be a little more positive. If you think we are that big of a loser as a team or university, why are you even on here?

Look. We all know that Peyton is just waiting for Arch to declare himself as committed to the University of Tennessee.

Then, at the press conference, after Arch signs his letter of intent and hands it to Coach Heupel, Coach will step up to the podium and say a few words about Arch, and what it means to have another Manning back at the helm of the team.

Next, AD Dr. Danny White will then step up to the podium say a few words before fielding questions from the reporters. As the questions wind down, AD White will ask Peyton to come and join him on stage.

As Peyton makes the walk from the back of the room, the crowd erupts in to thunderous applause. Peyton takes his place besides AD White and Coach Heupel, AD White mentions that there is one last piece of business before to take care of. He reaches under the podium, and pulls out an orange jersey with the number 16 and MANNING stenciled across the back. Coach Heupel leans in to the mic and says, "Please welcome your new Co-Offensive Coordinator for the University of Tennessee, Peyton Manning!"

Peyton has been wildly successful and at this point in his life could do as much or as little has he wants to do. To expect a guy that could be worth as much as $500 million to coach football like so many fans fantasize is naive at best. He seems content doing his endorsement deals, occasional tv gigs and helping his alma mater with their frequent coaching searches.

That's chilling. Gave me goose bumps. Would be awesome.

But let me continue your story.

Within hours of the announcement, volnation.,com and the volunteer twitterverse and the rest of college football social media are in an e-uproar. NEPOTISM! cry some, OLD HACK! say others. FULMERITE! from one corner. REMEMBER HE TRIED TO FORCE SCHIANO ON US! from two different directions. YEAH AND HE WAS INVOLVED WITH THAT PAPA JOHN RACIST! from left field. I DON'T EVEN LIKE BRAD PAISLEY! On and on.

Seems the Volunteer fan base, who all once loved Peyton, are now evenly divided between the rabid supporters, and the rapid denigrators. The uproar continues for weeks. And doesn't die down. It just seems to keep getting louder.

Arch and Peyton both try to pretend they haven't heard anything about it, that they never touch social media. In reality, though, of course they do. They're just like almost everyone else on this planet, one eye on their phones half the time. They and every member of the extensive Manning family are cringing at the low-class nature of the discussion.

Finally, Arch announces, just before the start of fall camp of his freshman season, that he's hanging up the cleats and becoming a Benedictine monk in the foothills of the Italian Alps. Peyton decides to join him. Cooper becomes a cab driver in Hong Kong. Eli takes over Papa Johns and gets rich(er).

The End.

And this is why Peyton will never coach. Especially not in Knoxville.

He needs to start his own "search firm" for everytime a UT chancellor, booster, or AD calls to ask his advice on who we should hire next. That would take something off his plate.
