AP feels like Steele still in fold for DC

Steele might be trying to get more $$$ if he's the DC.AHC.

Even if AllBarn is paying him lots of $$$ Steele may want more from UT just for his ego.

Time will tell.

If he is made DC/AHC Tennessee will have to pay him a salary commensurate with that role. Otherwise, Auburn would have a legitimate claim against him and/or the university regarding the mitigation clause in his contract.

I am sure there are all kinds of titles we can apply if he wants to go along for his alma mater, Co-coordinator at a really good price since AU has established he was not worth the 2.5 he was getting. Since he will only get 2.5 total from both sources he can impact the distribution. Maybe that is what has been going on the last couple of days, trying to figure out the way to set up the deal. He kind of holds a lot of cards at the moment. Could end up elsewhere too and walk away from our deal. But on the other hand he is under contract to us until he isn't. Kind of makes my head hurt.

Screw it. Give it to him. You got Heupel cheap compared to what we were reportedly willing to pay the other candidates. Use those savings to get Steele locked down.

Go get an NFL DC that’s not being retained with coach turnover!

I am very worried for Vol fans that keeping Steele makes too much sense. Usually, we would blow an opportunity that fell in our lap like this. Lets see if CJH is more of the same old same old, or perhaps he has something in that large noggin of his.

Agree, we Vol fans must give JH a fighting chance to succeed at Tennessee, after all he’s taken on, an almost impossible task of rebuilding a rebuilding rebuild

The situation is admittedly a strange one but I don't see why JH would not retain Steele and let Steele get his guys on defense.

Yes, I know Steele was hired by Pruitt. Yes, I know Steele is, rightly or wrongly, blamed for some palace intrigue with getting Malzahn shown the door. But, Steele obviously knows the higher-ups hired White to straighten out the AD and White hire JH and worked with JH at UCF and so Steele trying to curry favor with the administration or the AD simply won't work.

And so, JH is in with his boss and Steele cannot feasibly get between JH and White. Steele coached very good defenses at Auburn. He knows the SEC. He can recruit the Southeast. He can probably get Garner to be the DLC. He has connections to get other high quality defensive assistants. He's already on payroll. It just makes far too much sense to keep him unless JH can land a more proven DC than Steele and I highly doubt that given how good Steele is and the uncertainty at UT.

Says the longer this drags out the more he feels like Steele could be the DC

Well the assumption should be he is on staff at a 450K slot, could be any number of positions, until he is announced as something else or or he is confirmed to not be on staff. If not the DC choice, then we have to wait till he is on board to see if he wants Steele at current rate. If not we should stall to see if he jumps at another job and walk away from our money. Lots of moving parts that mean no news is just that, no news. Our new coach needs to help our new AD play the game to our best advantage. Bet he will. Steele should cover his bases as well. Nature of the coaching dance in these circumstances.

What is this sense of which you speak?
Unseen and unheard, no rhyme or reason
We are UT

Who could make more sense than Steele?

I like Steele and hope he is the preferred solution, but I am not sitting in the conference room with our new guys driving the train. We don't know as much and cannot be as informed as they are. I have no idea for example, what kind of staff can Steele put together RIGHT NOW. If they don't have a satisfactory answer then we have to play this out. His history could be an asset or could not.

My guess is that they are waiting to bring in a DC after Signing Day. Perhaps this coach doesn’t want to hurt his current team by jumping ship right before signing day, not that it is any better leaving right after.

Don't under stand the fascination with Kevin Steele he's 62 years old and if any of the Auburn rumors are true with his pushing Gus out. If I was a Head Coach I wouldn't want him anywhere near my team. Especially as a coordinator.

As for as Chavis, he'll be 65 years old this fall and has been hired by two teams, fired by 3 teams and been out of football for a year all in the last 6 years!

Those two are really going to go out and burn up the recruiting trail!

I'd bet the Coach Heupel is wanting folks closer to his on age or younger for his coaching staff.
