We may luck into Freeze or Kiffin at this rate. We know both would take the job.
I don't think Kiffin would. That would be a huge risk for him when he can stay at Oxford and win just as much as he would here, with way more job security and way less scrutiny.

I still don't understand why it matters. Sure it may be a lot to over come, but if you are getting paid 7-8 mil what does it matter? Nobody will hold it against you if you fail, they will all blame it on the sanctions and whatever else. plus you are getting fat checks in the process.
well, you can rest easy with the knowledge that for it to be true, doesn't require your understanding. lol.

How is everyone against Tony Elliott? JEREMY PRUITT was our coach last week.
For me it’s because if we’ve learned anything it’s that we can’t judge a teams success off of an assistant. It could be directly related to the assistant, but likely not. Look at Alabama. Saban should have failed miserably by now, he’s lost more assistants than I care to think of but still performs. How many of his assistants have won championships since taking over as HC elsewhere? Some have been successful, but is it because of hype? Program appeal to recruits? Who knows. The fact that JP was our coach last week(a proven assistant for multiple NC programs) is exactly the reason I am not thrilled about yet another assistant on a dominant team with even less overall success.

Then you also got to look at the talent they had. Of course Pruitts defense should have performed at Alabama, he had the best talent in the nation, and clearly Saban. Same can be said about his stint at Florida State, and Georgia(even though his defense there underperformed).

These assistants that work under a known, successful coach, with a roster that’s top notch, and each time an assistant leaves the group they directly coached still performs.... I’m not sure I’m comfortable attributing that success to that assistant.

Well and there’s the fact that it’s been proven(esp at TN) that being an assistant clearly won’t translate to being a good HC. Could it happen? Sure. Could I win the lottery? Sure. But just because I can win the lottery doesn’t mean it’s wise to spend every dime of my childs savings trying. That’s exactly UT. We are at the end of the rope, we can keep experimenting, wagering the future of the program on essentially winning the lottery, or just start being smarter with decisions.

If we end up with an assistant because every option has been exhausted, fine. But you better damn sure try your best to do whatever is needed to get the more promising outcome(proven coach). If there’s a coach that we couldn’t get because of________, and the AD could have made _________ happen? Well it’s par for the course at UT, should be shocking but it’s not. It’s more of the same, and I’ll be here because I seriously feel like a battered wife at this point not able to leave.

The way to find out if an assistant is indeed going to be a success P5 coach is for them to go to a smaller school. If they turn a smaller school into a winning program, then you get my vote. You’ve proven you can manage a team without the talent, and proven HC watching over you.

The past 15 years, NCAA violations, Elliott considering not taking the job.
None of that indicates beyond fixing. Stupid. If we are offering 8 mil per year that's fixable. Maybe not now because coaches are scared of potential sanctions, but AP said last night that if we didn't have that going on, Franklin is here. We'd be fixed. Done. Over.

No offense meant to you but wtf does Mike Farrell know. With the right coach and some good recruiting/development we could absolutely be contending in 2-3 years.

If our roster attrition stays at the same rate, the only thing we can be contending for in 2-3 years is 7-8 wins. Gotta have depth to win in this league. And not just bodies, but quality.

Local sports radio here in SC say tony Elliott would be an idiot to take the tennessee job. He’d have better options open up if he waits it out, places he wouldn’t be destined to fail. They also said South Carolina will recover before tennessee does because we’re beyond fixing.
Honestly, please don't kick me but I don't think he takes the job. I mentioned yesterday I think he gets cold feet and backs out.

This is off topic, but anyone that was on yesterday and saw the post about 2 hunters getting shot and killed on Reelfoot lake. It was 2 young men in their mid 20s. They shot some swing ducks and a 70 year old man in another blind got mad about it and went to their blind and killed 2 of the 3. The 3rd fought him and got away. The shooter is still at large. Extremely tragic and uncalled for. Over some dang ducks. SMH

Wow!

How did Clemson look without Elliott against OH ST? How does Bama look without Pruitt? Huge difference. But keep telling yourself Dabo is anything more than a cheerleader
You do realize that players go to Clemson because of Dabo and the Clemson brand and not Elliott right? Players go to bama for Saban, not Pruitt. At a certain point, the school and HC sell themselves

OSU, really? You're going to use Ohio State as an example? This program is going to have to be built, again and it's going to take more than a coordinator to do it
If the best we can get at this point is an OC, it is what it is. Im not thrilled about our situation but we dont have much to offer at this point.

You guys have got to stop using Clemson and Ohio State as examples, thats like saying Saban lost to Monroe in his first year to justify losing to Ga State. This is a different kind of rebuild
Clemson was not a powerhouse pre-2007, but whatever. This is obviously a different rebuild. That wasn't the point.

The exact same argument could have been used for Ryan Day or Riley or Kirby
Except all of those took over well oiled machines that were already humming. That is not the case with us. A rebuild like this is not the place to learn how to be the HC. I still would take Elliot over guys like Dykes and Healy but I'd rather have Chadwell.

I think if we can't secure an A lister, Elliot isn't the worst thing. He's offensive oriented. He can recruit. Its the management side for me. Can he handle the external forces being the head man? Who knows. Everyone started as an assistant coach. Maybe he handles it.
I think the same about Elliot. He is a very good offensively-minded coach and I have no doubt he would recruit well for TN. My concern is his capability in handling significant compliance issues, rebuilding a culture, and being the point of contact for the first time. If I were him, I would make my first HC job at a non-P5 school or at a P5 school with fewer expectations/issues.

I would prefer we hire a coach who has head coaching experience working under difficult situations. My first thought was O’Brien, who went through a similar situation at PSU. I worry that asking a first-time HC to maneuver through the next few years is asking too much. However, with the new AD and a great staff, Elliot could get the right support through these next critical years.

Home run usually means a good thing. You're not describing that

I'm saying that I believe this is the only thing which might make it not be an absolute homerun hire: if he couldn't get along with the AD. Otherwise, I could see multiple national championship games in our future.
