Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

I’m not so sure I want Steele here either. Guy tried to weasel his way to the Auburn job. Came here and is obviously pushing his name to VQ to try to lobby for our job. Will he give his all if he doesn’t get the job? Did he come here hoping Fulmer would make him head coach? A lot of questions...

I think it’s just the cool thing to rag in VQ at moment but they have shown over time that they will get the information. It takes time when a change happens so yes info is tight lipped and most info they have to pull from talking to people and connecting dots right now but once White and new Hc get in place VQ will be the ones getting the info. It happens everytime because they have proven to multiple coaches they can be trusted with info and when to release it. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that he has heard Whites name behind closed doors and was asked to keep shut until things were final. White name was circulating all morning according to Josh pate so that tells me 247 and likely VQ had been hearing all of it and asked to stay silent. They aren’t like Trey Wallace and Tony B that run mouth about everything they hear.

Bingo

Kiffin or Freeze would be amazing and would be here tomorrow if asked. But it has to be Napier or Chadwell. It's just gotta be. Both are solid options.

Personally I think Fickell would crush it here, but I don't think he's leaving until he gets to ohio state or something like that.

Cristobal is real shady in recruiting. He’s got a reputation that I think would steer us clear of him.

I thought about Hafley as well, but as you note he is a defensive guy and I just don’t think there’s enough of a sample size with him as HC yet.

Yeah I would be surprised if it was Cristobal. He took the Bama way to Oregon. He is taking advantage of outtalenting teams in a weak conference but not really sure he is out coaching them

I don’t understand this. Pruitt didn’t recruit any better than Jones but folks are acting like he was Kirby stacking 5*s. The implication that we need to cheat to land what Pruitt did manage speaks to him being a lousy recruiter otherwise. His classes remind me of Dooley with some high profile players but not earth shattering overall.
Not a fair comparison. Go back and look at Jones. He was signing 30 per class and artificially inflating the numbers. As soon as they cracked down on the blue shirt rules and they had to limit the number of scholarships (plus no more legacies) Jones' recruiting fell off a cliff. Pruitt's recruiting was objectively better.

Is like Steele as far away from the program as possible
He’s a manipulator and causes problems apparently
There’s a reason aubby didn’t hire him and he’s friends with fulmer

Time for new blood

Agreed. “Meetings with Plowman went well and she’s impressed” didn’t come from Plowman. I bet that’s just Steele passing info to Hubbs.
They're desperate, anyone pushing Steele after the AD hire is out of touch. No way Steele is HC, White was to big of a hire not to go big on a coach.

Another under the radar name that nobody has mentioned yet but would be a surprise hire.

Pat Fitzgerald

A little interesting tidbit on Pat Fitzerald that at least puts him into the "not impossible" category -- Northwestern's AD since 2008 is leaving to become the new Commissioner of the ACC.

Tried to read all of the night shift. Good thing is I got some laughs in, and the mention of Sonny Dykes may have been the loudest. Donde is running a tight ship for anyone to know.

I’m on your six, @VolGee4

Dykes made me laugh, don’t think Hubbs knows anything now, @HankHill still rolling his eyes at Fleck/Butch comparisons, and I am not convinced a new AD is gonna hire someone as divisive as Lane unless he has all of the confidence in the world that he’s the guy.

I’m revising my prediction. I think the list is Campbell, Napier, and then Chadwell.

Brice’s latest football scoop article focuses on Elliott. Saying White almost hired him at UCF before going with Heupel.

Thats what I dont get. He wasn't good enough to hire for UCF, but now he's good enough for a HC job here. WE CANT GO THE COORDINATOR ROUTE!!!!! This isn't a tryout job. Especially If we have $7 million + to pay. With what AV said Im not worried about hiring a coordinator, though. Just a weird name to be thrown out there.

. No way. He might be a good coach, but he’s only been an OC for two years with the best QB in the country and elite talent. Zero HC experience. He would be the definition of a “learn on the job” hire. The opposite of what UT needs. He’s basically the offensive version of Pruitt from what I can tell.

I'm guessing he would have to sell Elliot to Plowman and Boyd since it doesn't fit wit their criteria of a sitting head coach. Is Clemson's success on offense related to tons of top rated talent usually playing teams with significantly LESS talent or because of the schemes Elliot has put in place? Also...for the last 4 years he has been CO offensive coordinator. 15-19 that is. This year was first year he was sole OC.

Here is the mistake Currie made that hopefully White won't. Currie let the fever pitch grow about Gruden, he should have found a way to make sure everyone knew Gruden wasn't on the table. Behind the scenes Currie thought it was "funny" that everyone thought Gruden was on the table.

The same fever pitch is going to grow for Kiffin. If he isn't a legit candidate, they better find a way to ease into it before possibly walking out what would seem a disappointment to fans but an actual good hire.
First: no way it gets to the level of fever pitch as Gruden...no way. Period

Second: John Currie could have flat out said, "Gruden isn't coming", and most would have said, "SMOKESCREEN!!!".

Third: This isn't going to last long enough for it to build to that. Butch was fired on Nov 12, Schiano Sunday was Nov 26. That was 2 weeks for it to build and build and build and build; also, Gruden rumors started before Butch was even fired...hell, before he was even hired. I believe we have our new coach by Wed, at the latest.

But, I do believe Currie was laughing at us throughout.
