Jamey Chadwell (Coastal Carolina)

I respectfully disagree. Their revised schedule wasn't much different than their original schedule. They would have started with South Carolina - and as bad Carolina was in 2020 - Coastal may have beaten TWO Power 5 teams in Carolina and Kansas. They would have beaten Tennessee by 10 points if they would have played. Chadwell IMO would be the most realistic best hire that Tennessee could make and someone who can get the fanbase behind him in a hurry. He'd recruit lights out at the beginning and hopefully he could coach well enough to keep that momentum going.

The only thing he needs would be to surround himself with experienced assistants with plenty of SEC experience. He'd have that in guys like Steele, Garner, and Jay Graham right off the bat. Let him bring in a few of his assistants from Coastal but have the majority of assistants made up of seasoned SEC coaches who know the ropes in the league.

Great in theory to be a local Dabo and surrounding himself. To me if he's here it's on the cheap knowing we are about to get hammered with with sanctions. Beating Kansas, S. Carolina and us by 10 isn't a resume builder to me. Beat UGA or Florida which is something TN hasn't been able to do while you're at a school like CC to wet the whistle.

Coastal hasn't even had a D1 program for 5 years. I think going 11-1 in the 4th year in D1 is a really big accomplishment no matter where it's at. If Chadwell can coach those kids at Coastal up to the point where they are as good as they were this year - and he's National Coach of the Year - I think given our circumstances he would be a really good hire. We're likely going to be bowl banned for a year or two anyway and if someone like him comes in no one is expecting to win big right off the bat. He would just need to show improvement and look like he's fielding a team that is progressing and players that are getting better as he goes along.

Just curious, with the few openings out there or have already taken place... how many was he in consideration for or turned down? I get what you're saying but if he's here it's to hope for the best, get him cheap and maybe if it works out look good.

I think Chadwell is a great coach; but do we truly believe he’s ready for the “big” show that is the SEC and the University of Tennessee?

None of us can truly relate to being a P5 coach; but we all know the SEC as well as UT is a pressure cooker once you check that box to become a coach at a major program.
Probably not.... He was complaining to the media that he CC deserved a playoff spot after their big "quality win" over BYU.

Wouldn't you expect your coach to lobby for a playoff spot? BYU at the time had beaten everyone pretty handily and was a very good win for Coastal. On a few days notice. That was very impressive.

Beating Troy, UTSA, and LA Tech is hardly murders row. In any case the gravy schedule that CC played did not come close to earning them a playoff spot.

If Covid does not happen he is not up for discussion. Although a good year, his team would have been exposed by homecoming games.
Uhm they beat two top 25 teams. They played all their conference games as well.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

It wasn't La Tech. It was Louisiana....undefeated at the time, who already beaten Big 12 runner up Iowa State by two scores. They play in the sun-belt. They played their regular schedule in addition to a top 15 BYU team...

I swear, some of you all are so full of crap...

The more I look into candidates, who might actually want to come not knowing what sanctions we may have and who could do a good job here...chadwell continues moving up my list.
If we could keep Steele, Chaney, and Graham...I could get onboard

We're not Texas okay?

ANY new coach has to start with x and os and understand his players strengths before taking on any political crap. Chadwell is better than most out there doing it in that regards.

Some of you all have the silliest logic.

"YEAH, I'd feel more comfortable if Florida hired him first". Smh
... like how the heck is he supposed to get P5 experience if a P5.school won't hire him? Leading to question 2 in that WHY would you let someone else P5 hire him when you already knew he was good enough???

Look, I get it. It's still not a gravy schedule in comparison. But what I'm saying is that any coach is going to lobby for his team if they are undefeated. They get paid to promote themselves like that. If someone would have broke a story saying, "Coach Chadwell, when asked about the College Playoff, said that his squad had a lot of talent but they didn't belong in the discussion with the likes of teams such as Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson" what would you think of him?

I would think something like my God this guy don't know how to play the game. What would his players think of him? He had them of the mentality, literally, "Anytime, Anywhere" and they literally thought they could go anywhere and play anyone at anytime and have a chance to beat them. He had players at Myrtle Beach Tech thinking they could step on the field with Alabama and beat them. A bunch of 2 star players. That's why him at a place like Tennessee with 4 and hopefully a few 5 star players is fun to think about. I could definitely get behind Chadwell if we had to go that route - MUCH more over keeping Steele as coach or going to get another older guy like Marrone.

Remind me which Power 5 job he's turned down? I'll hang up and listen. Love the show guys.

That's not always public. But he's had numerous offers according to him. He told them to stop calling. You would know that if you did any type of research instead of just being a wind bag...

Chadwell and Chaney could work well together. They could produce an explosive offense. The constrasts could create an offense that would be really hard to stop.
But Chadwell needs to be the play-caller.

So no offers, I didn't say interviews. Agents are always floating for leverage. I wish him all the best and hope he does well. But if he's coming here its because we are going cheap and he's facing sanctions much like Kiffin at USC.

Tennessee is not the only big time program to fall in a rut of mediocrity for 10-15 years. Nebraska used to be the big bully on the block, not any more. Same for Michigan, Texas and Penn State. PSU lost their first five games this year. Since Pete Carroll left USC, they have been mediocre as well. It comes and goes in cycles, particularly with the way conferences have grown into mega conferences, changes in recruiting, the transfer rules, etc. The Big Ten has 14 teams, the ACC 15, craziness.

I still say go look at Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern, Josh Heupel at UCF and Dave Clawson at Wake Forest, proven program builders, winners that run clean programs for the next head coach.

Hire him now!!

I could live with him being the head coach here...He is a VOL and bleeds orange....He might be our diamond in the rough and as I have said before I love his style of offense...Would be exciting to see him recruit some SEC speed to go with it and watch it flourish....Very unique.

Tennessee needs to go after Jamey Chadwell. I keep seeing people say things like “go hire a proven winner” and “these up and comers like Chadwell will never work.”

In reality, NO PROVEN COACH with any brain cells would walk into this dumpster fire right now. Why would they?
NCAA Investigations, haven’t won the East since 2007, haven’t won the SEC since 98, haven’t won 10 games in over a decade, have to play against Fla, UGA, and Bama every year, players transferring left and right...
Again— why would ANYONE that is good want to come here?
And yes, I know, Freeze and Kiffin are likely the only two proven winners that would accept the job.
The problem is, Tennessee won’t hire them. We all know that.

So the only thing Tennessee can do is settle. It’s where we’re at. No truly “proven” coach is going to come to Knoxville right now and take this job. Chadwell is the best you will get in my opinion.

He’s a Tennessee guy, he runs a good offense, he’s young, and went 11-1 at Coastal Carolina this past year. He wasn’t my first choice, but at this point, he might be close to the only choice we have.
