The first person I'd make say no is Chris Peterson. Do I think its likely we get him or he'd want to come here, no....but I'd hand him the checkbook and tell him to name his price. Only after we gave him the same treatment that Bama gave ol Nicky boy, and he still walk, would I then back the truck up to Liverty U and move Freeze to Knoxville.

Peterson has been who I thought we should have made an offer to that he couldn't resist for a couple coaching searches now. There is no downside with him.
All I know is I want a coach who is innovative on both sides of the ball. RPOs, pattern matching, exotic blitzes, creative passing schemes etc. Not the same three predictable plays all game

Herman? Because of possible issues with Texas Adm and Boosters. Apparently there are rough relationships there. Also there were possible reports he implied that the same people mentioned above and the fans as a group were racists. From his ability to run a major college football program From an x’s and o’s standpoint heard nothing negative but the HC has to be a CEO Type who can be diplomatic to the degree that he work well with all the different factions within a university.
Herman would culturally clash with Tennessee fans as badly as Jerry Green. And he would say things harsher than snide, elitist comments about K-Mart. Vol fans are pretty sensitive. But he is a good offensive coach.

* Petersen
You know, I'm not going to be the one to sit here and claim my phone autocorrected his name to Peterson lol.....the man has been my favorite coach since the Boise St win over Oklahoma, and I never realized his name was spelled that way. I guess my brain has always done that thing where it assumes letters based on prior learning lol. So thank you for pointing that out haha.

You serious?

5 seasons - Butch: 34-27 (.557)
With 2 losing seasons out of 5

4 seasons - Herman: 32-18 (.640)
Never had a losing season
Took Texas to 4 straight bowls....winning all of them.

Try again......his record is nothing like Butch’s at Tennessee.
First, by many accounts, he's a real piece of work. Kind of a cross between Saban and Dooley in terms of personality. Second, if he couldn't take a program with the instate recruiting base and resources of a Texas to a a higher level and compete with the likes of OU, I don't see him being terribly successful here at Tennessee. If we can't take a chance on guys like Freeze or Kiffin, I'm ready for a young, up and comer type who's innovative offensively and is a proven winner at his previous stops. At least with the younger guys, we have the hope of a higher ceiling. With guys like Herman and Malzahn, we know what that ceiling is and I'm not sure it's high enough to make them a long term answer given the expectations of this fan base.

Lol

You told us all for over a month there was NO way Pruitt would be fired.

You said Pruitt WOULD be the head coach next season.

But hey......your “opinion” is real this time.

We waited, we have seen, Pruitt is gone......will Steele be the next coach.....we don’t know, including you.

He very well “could” be the coach for this season. I hope not and I don’t think so....but maybe......but would still be on an interim basis in my opinion.
This guys been running his mouth for two months about how he knows what’s going on. Just because you live 30 minutes from the stadium doesn’t mean you know anymore than everyone else who listens to talk radio in Knoxville. Same thing with that guy who was a janitor at the student life center. “Connected people.” Will the optics look bad when we hire freeze? Yeah they’ll look terrible. Is it going to make a hell of a story? You’re dang right it will.

You simply cannot fire a coach for cause with NCAA violations and fire the AD who wanted him and then turn around and hire a guy who was fired for the same thing. It's not happening. That's thing number 1.

Number 2, even if UT offered him the job, with possible big sanctions coming, he's not going to want the job. He will go somewhere where he can have success immediately.

Look for a very safe, unexciting hire. Not a no-name hire like in years past, but not someone who excites you.

Also, the next coach at UT will not be the one to lead UT back to a championship. It will be the one after him.
Really going out on a limb with that one....no offense.

What better person to lead us through the depths of hell(NCAA sanctions) then Pastor Hugh.

Edit: So there’s no confusion, I want Freeze at UT more than anybody.
I agree. Freeze would be my top choice, but unfortunately, there's not a snowballs chance in hades he's even getting a call this time. Both he and Kiffin are radioactive and untouchable. I've accepted that, but I really want to make a run at a young guy who's exciting and offensively minded. A guy who has shown he can run with the big boys with less talent. A guy who is hungry. Guys like Malzahn and Herman wouldn't even get a look from me. I'll take a shot with a lower D1 or D2 program first. No taste for retreads.

Campbell is a good coach. What he's doing at Iowa State is impressive, his recruiting is very suspect. He's been there a while now, and his classes aren't even top 5 in the Big 12.

All I see from Campbell is the best coach in the history of Iowa State...but the 4 best coach in the Big 12 on any given season.

Pass....

I think it is fair to say that the coach that would unite this fanbase and ignite Tennessee nationally from an excitement standpoint is Hugh Freeze. The consistent refrain regarding Freeze to the Hill is that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey would veto the hire, and that it would look hypocritical for UT to hire a coach with previous violations and a rather colorful history.

First, let me say this. We live in an era where hypocrisy abounds. So I do not think hypocrisy should be an excluding factor. Hell, a guy who was coaching drunk on the field at USC just won a NC and took the Texas job. Coach Freeze took a leave of absence and now has coached without issue at Liberty, a Christian university that was able to see beyond his past.

So that would leave the biggest impediment to hiring Coach Freeze as Mr. Sankey. Here is why I believe he would be smart to allow UT to hire him.

The SEC is best and most competitive conference in college football. But I think it is a better conference all around when Tennessee is a contender. Let's be honest, the East was at its best when Tennessee, UF, and UGA were consistently battling each other for the division title. It made for better games, full stadiums, and appointment television.

If Tennessee were to hire Coach Freeze, the SEC is immediately a better conference. One of its Blue Blood programs is revitalized and a national story (in a good way). Another innovative offensive mind in the conference that has a history of success and an exciting style of play that further displays the SEC as the premier conference in college football.

The alternative is potential disaster for UT and a stain on the SEC. Tennessee could easily become mired in yet another difficult coaching hire that might solidify it as a lower-tier program for years to come. Is that what Mr. Sankey wants for the program or the SEC? Yes, maybe Tennessee gets lucky and finds a diamond in the rough and returns to national relevance; but, is that likely based on what has occurred over the last 12 years? Is it possible a coach on the same level of Freeze is willing to come to Knoxville facing a major rebuild with sanctions pending? Unlikely. So Mr. Sankey would have to ask a very basic question: Do I want Tennessee and the SEC to be worse off in order to make a point?

I can assure you Tennessee will be implementing stringent controls within the football program following this investigation. These improvements in oversight could also be used to satisfy Mr. Sankey that Coach Freeze wouldn't be running afoul of its compliance program. And from what I've read, I think Coach Freeze would welcome the opportunity to get back into a major program and prove he is a different coach and a better man than he was several years ago.

I think that if Mr. Sankey wants the best for the SEC, he will allow Tennessee to hire a coach that immediately elevates the program at a time of crucial importance. And he should do so because the alternative is just bad for the SEC.
Hire the Liberty AD while we are at it!!

If the coach after the one we're getting ready to hire is going to win us a championship then we should fire the new guy quickly

Heck and the NCAA allowed LSU basketball coach to remain after admitting on fbi wire tap that he was in bidding wars for players. I still haven't got my head wrapped around that one yet. And of course noble North Carolina who covered up and covered up the cheating scandal only to get the hand slapped. And of course Miami oh Miami. GBO!!!!!
Yup. And now watch the NCAA hammer the Vols for being open and transparent about the issues. You

The UT Chancellor and President from what they said yesterday about integrity wont allow Hugh Freeze to become Tennessee head football coach.
