I think the whole "Steele was hired to replace Pruitt when he is fired" is just made up VN fiction. Steele is not qualified to be a HC. I think he is close to retirement and wants to come home and help UT, however he can.

Then you don’t know Fulmer. Steele was in the final group to be hired last time. Steele wanted to be head coach at auburn. I think it’s safe to say he wants to be head coach here. He could get a gig elsewhere for more money. Fulmer just promised him the chance to be interim if and when Pruitt is gone.
