Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

Have never been more apathetic for TN football. Usually I am leaning into next years recruiting, transfer players, etc. With Pruitt as the coach, all those things don’t matter. At a macro level we are broken and he will waste whatever we do have. It’s the ultimate low and guys like Tom Herman and Luke Fickell are available. It’s insane.

Just skipping all threads hoping one day I will pop into this amazing forum with good news on a leadership change.

Question for those who follow NBA, how does Pons' game translate to the next level. Bench guy for defense?
With all the extra time NBA players have to develop their game, I think he will translate very well. Already has a great mid range game, and he’s a freak defender/athlete

yea the biggest thing for me with Jeff Fisher or Doug Marrone is we would have a grown up running the show and you would never have to question effort again out of our team. They are both leaders and can literally lay out the blue print for players that want to get to the next level and last at the next level. I also know how many talented coaches these guys have coached with and against... so i think their staffs would be made up of coach first, recruit second guys which is what we desperately need.
100%
I know the Barnes comparison is being played out, but build this program by developing the Grant, Admirals, and Bones of the world and the Keon’s and Springers will follow

I wish I could like this 100 times.

That line of thinking is so played out. For years people said the spread would never work in the SEC and here we are, SEC running spreads everywhere. Chadwells offense is no different, other than it is a little more innovative mixing in triple option. I’d be willing to wager a small amount that we’ll see some of his plays mixed into play calls next season in the SEC.
The spread was a new system being run by finesse offenses, SEC coaches didn't like it until they learned they could be physical with it. Chadwells offense is a gimmick, we might as well hire Monken if he's the choicd

Honestly it’s all about luck when hiring college coaches. If it were up to Florida Chip Kelly or Scott Frost would be their coach, and those hires were considered home runs by UCLA and Nebraska. We just gotta get lucky.
Agree. Just about everyone under the sun has tried to dissect what a good coaching hire is. Many seem to now agree there is no sure formula. Many "sure things" turn out total busts.

Obviously the sport being a zero-sum game complicates things, especially in a top-heavy sport...a large majority necessarily have to be failures, mathematically speaking.

I think you just have to keep taking your shots, even though it could cause a lot of short-term instability. Great programs don't just stop and settle for mediocrity.

Before that game against Liberty I thought the same thing - no go in the SEC. Now I think the opposite because he can adapt it. It's not a Mahlzahn HS hurry up 6 play O. He does some interesting things with motion and formations that make the RPO game more effective. Totally dependent on the right trigger man at QB. Which is why Hooker would be a good transition until Salter is ready. Salter was made for an O scheme like that.

To further my last post about Having a grown up in Marrone or Fisher is both of them have enough clout and the reputation to not only handle all the “bs” that comes with being a major team/schools HC.... but they can be totally trusted with power and the responsibilities that come with it. So i think that would limit the amount of “cooks in the kitchen” so to speak. It’s going to be hard for our admin/boosters to give that to really any college coach outside of the untouchables.

stuff like that really matters. Washington redskins are a great example. I know they only went 6-10 but since Rivera has taken over structurally they are much better and they don’t deal with people not taking their jobs seriously Ie: Haskins. The jets need that desperately in the next hire.

Traditional sec coaches were so slow to catch up. They let Spurrier run things for over a decade with a "big 12" style of offense. Then Urban started doing the same. Saban obviously succeedee with absurd talent and defense, but even he began to understand he wasn't going to be able to keep up using a suboptimal style.

It took them nearly 20 years to realize spread passing offenses are far superior. Some still don't.

Ok. But like can you talk to Rivera about trading for Watson? The titans don't want to play him anymore. Thanks

My question is if the AD is cheap on hires, don’t they understand a healthy program that is winning more games would bring in more revenue?
The AD is not cheap on hires. That’s one of the biggest falsehoods out there about this AD. Look at the money they’ve shelled out for coaches over the past ten years.

Exactly. Butch has honestly been the closest we've come to that moniker. Chadwell's O is nothing like that though

Add in that its now the dominant offensive scheme in high schools. Less ramp up time for young players.
