I don't see marrone being a good hire. I also though Chip would kill it at UCLA, so that proves I have no idea what I am talking about.

This is all that needs to be said. None of us really have a clue. Marrone could actually be really good and he just left Cuse too early for anyone to get a sense of how good he would be in college. NFL head coaching success is always a little muddled because the GM also plays a huge role. He could also be a total failure and his heart might not be in the college game at all and he wouldn't realize that until long after he signed the contract.

Fair enough, I respect the back and forth dialog, I guess my thought is that IF the choice were to be Marrone, I consider his previous experience as a P5 HC, and an NFL HC as more than on par with the names you've listed as well. Only with a proven track record of navigating difficult places to win (SU, Buffalo and Jacksonville). My personal opinion, is that he'd do better from a program building standpoint than Freeze/Gus/Napier/Chadwell and would be on par with Herman/Campbell in that regard. I also feel he could check a lot of boxes for a lot of the decision makers that others on this list do not:

HC experience
Southeastern experience (SEC and geographically)
Offensive background (specifically with O-Line development)
Program builder (just in a non traditional thought)
Relationship with CPF and UT

To me there's a lot more riskier hires we could make. Including the guy who current has the job. Fact of the matter is, we as a fan base have no idea who would or wouldn't be successful here. I would have bet money that CJP would have made a good transition from top level SEC DC to HC, but he hasn't.
Marrone doesn't have P5 HC experience. Syracuse was in the Big East when he was there.

There are worse hires that we could make - I think Napier or Chadwell would probably be a worse hire, but there are far better hires we could make too.

I'm on board with Marrone. I'm sure there will be a bunch of people who will hate it, but I'll give him the chance.

Same, especially if he brings his S&C guy, keeps Jay and Tee, and makes a run at the combo of Steele and Garner.

I still think we need someone younger, and innovative, but wtf do I know. I study stone tools for a living.

That same thought process also goes for next year and the year after and ----------- :):)
I’m not for kicking it down the road if our administration feels a change is necessary.... just curious if it would cost us more like people were claiming?

The sooner we accept our place as a mediocre program with a mediocre administration, the better for all of us. This administration showed itself once they hired Derek Dooley and the coaches since then.
Dude, where have you been the past 12 years :cool:

Give me Freeze or Fickell, if we can't get one of the two, I'm fine with just sticking with Pruitt, Marrone is a band-aid hire that may make us better than we are but won't truly make us relevant and Napier and Chadwell are just too unknown for me

He has NFL8 experience.
It isn't great NFL experience though. Looked like he was getting Buffalo turned around, but bolted after just 2 years because he had that out in his contract. Ends up in Jacksonville and had a great first season, but evidently that was a flash in the pan. Marrone has no P5 HC experience, and his last experience in the SEC was an an offensive line coach 20 years ago.

At this point, I really think Tennessee's only way out is hiring a guy with P5 HC experience. Take as much guesswork out of the equation as possible, because our people have proven time and time again that they cannot successfully identify an up-and-comer.

The known is Pruitt sucks. You don’t give a crap head coach another year. I’d rather have an unknown.

I'd rather hold out hope that we may make a better hire next year, but I doubt we would.

Wed probably be a 7-5 program with Marrone. Maybe the occasional 8 wins. But he ain't beating Bama, UF or UGA.

He took Syracuse from worst in conference to first in conference in 4 years, I’d take that all day.

At first, the thought of Marrone bores the crap out of me. Especially with Freeze, Napier, Chadwell, Fickel and Campbell still “out there.”

However after further thought and reading, he’s an established NFL HC. His ties to the league could be very appealing to recruits as well as identifying assistants that can develop talent for the league. I’m intrigued to say the least. I’ll keep listening.
