Correct me if I’m wrong but they gave Saban total control .A bargain bin hire is having to take whatever is there. There has to be mutual interest. Unfortunately no proven coach has shown any interest in coming to this program. As a result of the administration and those in charge, who can blame them. I reflect back when Bama was searching for their savior and offered Saban 4 mil, twice what the next highest coach was offered. Saban had that potential to marshall the available assets of a historic program and build back a dynasty. It would be great if a similar coach could see potential in our program and take that chance. That's what we have been waiting for for the past 15 years.
My point is a lot of these prerequisites thrown about here are not attainable. Majors was the last "qualified" hire based on his previous head coaching record and even then his first 4 years at UT were pretty disappointing.True about Fulmer but Fulmer inherited a Top 10 team where he had familiarity with the staff, players, and schemes...
It wasn’t as diplomatic as you make it either. Patterson said he’d rather burn in hell than ever work for Mike Hamilton. He wanted to go to Tennessee the first time he was asked, probably wanted to the second time but no way in hell it was happening with Hamilton as AD.Correct, we reached out after Kiffin left. It was more diplomatic than you are implying but ultimately Patterson said no for the following reasons:
(Note, wife lived with TCU booster her last 2 years in HS. Shes still close to them.)
1. There were hard feelings from prior search. We did soften our stance on the assistants (namely Fuente) after Andy Dalton had a good 2009.
2. Mike Sherman was stinking up the joint at A&M and Patterson thought he might be in play there in the near future.
3. Patterson had really good team (Andy Dalton returning)
4. Franchione left TCU for Bama and got blindsided by NCAA stuff at Bama. Fear this might be the case after Kiffin.
5. He didnt care for or trust Hammy.
6. Money gap still existed and combine that with 1-5 and this was an easy decision for Patterson.
With all that being said, many within the TCU program who thinks Patterson would have listened to a strong offer since the 2012 realignment had not happened and there were issues about long term viability of the MWC.
You get what you pay for.
The results speaks for themselves.
Texas A&M threw a truck load of money at Jimbo Fisher and it’s paid off tremendously.
Pruitt was a bargain bin hire whether some fans want to admit it or not.
Very trueIn my idea of bargain bin hire. Is someone that would be like on no other National Championship programs hiring radar. And so its not about money. Take Dooley. His resume didnt warrant the hiring. We definitely had no one else to compete with to hire him. Butch at least wanted by Colorado so I personally didn't put him in that category although many on here did. In fact some referred to him a Google coach which is only the case for people who dont deeply follow the sport. Those people dont really deserve a say in coaching hires and firings. They simply dont have enough information.
I have seen enough coaches be successful at lower rates of pay than their peers. So my definition of bargain bin has little to do with pay but rather how "in demand" they are.

There’s an interview with Patterson out there somewhere that details some of what happened in the initial search. I can’t remember who wrote it but it’s there. Patterson’s opinions of how Hamilton handled him was more scathing off the record.
Too much of a football coach? Gee, what was Hamilton looking for, someone who could coach football in the fall and coach baseball in the spring?Too much of a football coach according to Hamilton
So how do you explain paying big bucks for no results?...See Michigan, Texas, and FSU.
Too much of a football coach? Gee, what was Hamilton looking for, someone who could coach football in the fall and coach baseball in the spring?
I'm being extremely sarcastic, but was Hamilton actually more afraid of someone who didn't need his help (or meddling) in running a program?
Harbaugh is 49-22. Pruitt is 16-19.
Herman is 32-18 (and only makes $1MM more than Pruitt)
Which FSU coach you referring to? Fisher, who won a Natty. Norvell, who just finished first year and has lower salary than Pruitt?
