Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

A glaring problem to me is that accepting the Tennessee job is seen as risky at this point. A coach held in high regard may not want to come here and risk getting blown out by UGA and Bama year after year. There's a climb here waiting on them.

You can't just step in and start drawing up plays. Which is what Pruitt kinda did imo. He jumped straight into football and recruiting and never looked back or deeper. You've got to get your hands dirty and fix the underlying programs within the program. We need a problem solver willing to do more and loves that side of the job, and talented enough relationally to do it well. AND is also a great coach when it's time to play. Bruce Pearl comes to mind. These coaches light up people's eyes and hearts and wallets. It's part of the job to manage players, assistants, admin, fans etc... When you do it well you can get a whole community and program bought in and pulling in the same direction. Tennessee is the definition of a sleeping giant. We just lack the right leader.

I don't know who the right person is for the this job. Doesn't seem to be Pruitt unless he changes, which could happen. But I'm not holding my breath. He represents and advocates for our football team to the absolute minimum degree possible for him to remain employed. It's mainly just a bummer.

Freeze is a risk in his own way (hey us too!). Which is why he hasn't been hired by anybody yet. He would bring the necessary skills to do both sides of the job and do it well. He would have the motivation and drive to come in and climb back to prominence alongside us. He may get us in trouble someday, but Pruitt might too. He's not perfect but he would be a clear upgrade. This is big boy ball, you've got to go upgrade when you can. This business is cutthroat. Recruiting sure is. Why not with coaches? I've decided to keep believing in joy. Anything could happen over the next few weeks or even months. But I think hiring Freeze is the best path out of the bottom. Maybe they make us wait another year to try it maybe not. Either way I'll be around.

Terrific post.

Also has a reputation of a toxic locker room culture here at Texas, and his players think he’s a joke. I’m in Austin and had an intern from one of his teams. He’s far from a home run, but admittedly an upgrade from the gump
He wouldn’t be winning if the locker room was toxic. You don’t lose all three games by a combined 13 points if your players don’t fight for you. We have a toxic locker room whether people want to admit it or not. But you don’t get blown out every week if your players truly cared.

Will continue to stand by what I said earlier, all decisions will not be made until the investigation is done.

So many do not understand how things work. I agree.

Potential lawsuit is at stake. Jeremy needs resolution of this as well as UT. If he is fired during an on-going investigation it damages his reputation and future employment. Defamation suits are difficult to win, however, doing so at this time if it comes out that the violations were only minor would give him cause to sue and likely win a judgment. Which UT would need to settle before going to court and add to the already horrendous buy-out. Potential HC hires would see it all play out in the media and avoid this place more than they already do.

Patience, grasshoppers. Rant and vent on here all you want to let off steam. Wait until resolution of the investigation before calling for their heads.

I have been hearing a lot about players thinking their coach is a joke at winning programs but for some reason it is reported our players love Pruitt with his inept coaching ability on display at every game we play. Hmmm....

Winning is winning. No matter if it is 20 or 1. Go look at Napier. Most of his wins are close one score games. Do you like him? I would take him over Pruitt any day of the week.
Maybe it just means Herman and Napier, unlike Pruitt, know when to kick FGs, when to go for it on 4th and short, etc.

Yep. Why would you want a roster full of players who support a proven, inept HC/staff? Pope already told everybody if they read his comments from the The Athletic exit interview. With those comments in mind and by observing what you see on the field, you have all the information you need to know what the real situation is on Rocky Top.

So, if UT wants to win there is only one answer as to what to do with Jeremy. He recruited said roster and retained the Botch players he chooses to play over his own. Get through the investigation, make a report through the media, have a replacement ready, and then fire his arse.

The wins aren’t my issue.
it’s the losses to lower ranked less talented teams.
That’s a “details of coaching” problem.
Our current coach already has a “detail” issue.

I don’t want to sit through another 4 years of the same issues.

Herman needs to get another “Houston” type job to work his issues out.

They do. Especially with Napier in that he is using a less talented roster. When you play against more talented or hot teams you play to keep the score close going into the 4th quarter. That leads to games decided by one score. Herman no longer had the huge talent disparity at Texas. His team was "as" talented as the better programs. However, before he arrived the program had forgotten how to win. The winning culture takes time to rebuild. A 71% winning percentage tells me he knows how. For contrast, look at the difference at UT with Jeremy. Is he developing a winning culture? All we see are blow-outs, no fight in the players, no positive adjustments at half time, etc. Just not competitive. Winning vs. losing cultures.

They have tried but just really screwed things up..... They obviously want to win..... look at all the buyouts they have absorbed to try and win..... we also have one of the highest recruiting coaches and assistant coaches salaries in the country.... that shows they care but they need better decision makers.
Imagine if they had just went out and opened their check book up and hired a real coach. More than likely this program would not be in the shape that its in and probably have saved money. No, they want to run out here and pay 3-4 million and expect Saban results with these dollar tree hires. Its costing them more money to flat out suck. Dont want to hear, who was they going to hire. Money talks. If Pruitt is here this year and I am sure that he will be. Then you can turn the lights out on this program.

Herman . If not the best option is still a huge upgrade over Pruitt. He would be a solid hire for us, one of the best or possibly the best candidate out there right now.

Yes Sir....nailed it.

I will continue to say fire Pruitt and Fulmer until the investigation is done. lol....This University is too stupid to get out of their own way. We can come to learn that Pruitt was paying money, drugs and prostitutes and they would still try to justify in keeping this clown.

Agree....Texas scored over 50 points 4 times this season and over 40 twice more...All Texas needed was a better defense...Huge upgrade

It’s sad how much we will have ended up spending after Pruitt is inevitably fired. In salary and buyouts well over $90 million since kiffin.
Could you imagine who we could have hired in 2009 if we just offered $7-$8million a year? Imagine the excess on revenues from the brand not taking a decade long dive into irrelevancy.

It has to be Jimbo type money though. You aren’t paying a great coach $5 million to come after that public fiasco last time. Guys are being paid that everywhere. Just like we pay Barnes at a premium, our football program has to pay a premium because of its current situation.
