I don't mean to suggest it is simple "addition by subtraction." When you know an employee isn't working out, you don't wait to fire them because you're afraid you won't find something better.right decision or not.....that's not the issue....i've said this a dozen times...deciding to fire pruitt is the easiest part of the whole deal. there's nothing he's done that says you absolutely have to bring him back and nobody...NOBODY...would be shocked/surprised if we fired him.
that, however, doesn't mean "we win" as a result. if history teaches us anything, we either stay the same, or go backwards with the hire.
so, if that's the case, and you don't like the pool that's out there right now.....why do anything if it doesn't IMPROVE the program?
in cases like this, addition by subtraction may not apply......it certainly hasn't the past 10 years.
We've made four coaching hires in the last decade - I would argue two of them were bad and two were good. Dooley and Pruitt have had zero redeeming qualities. Kiffin was EVERYTHING we wanted. Butch was on the precipice of consistent success and had two rosters as good as anything we've seen here since 2001. And besides Kiffin, none of those guys were at the top of our lists. That means we're scraping the bottom of the barrel and still batting .500.
I don't mean to be "that guy", but I have some contacts in the coaching community. Billy Napier and Jamey Chadwell are very good coaches who we can hire tomorrow if we want. Jeff Brohm, Neal Brown and Scott Satterfield can all be had - they are all unhappy at their current jobs. There are a handful of assistants we could try that make more sense than keeping Jeremy Pruitt and letting him run out the clock.
If we don't swing this year we will regret it. You know it and I know it. Because in 10 months, when we're having this conversation again after we go 5-7, we won't suddenly be more competent and the coaching pool won't suddenly be better. You're either a year early or a year late - which one will we be?
