Very, very strange response by Pruitt, if true. After 2018 (his first year), everyone was in his corner. This was true even as UT suffered through another losing season at 5-7 and got blown out by WVU, UF, UGA, UA, Mizzou, and Vandy. He really had one nice win, which was over AU, but the rest of the season was Dooley or Butch-like. In 2019, he suffered one of the most shameful losses in program history to Georgia State, not even Dooley or Butch had a loss like that. He perhaps topped that with the BYU loss, which was inexcusable, and we also got blown out UF, UGA, and UA. Even then, almost everyone rallied behind him even then for a winning streak over some pedestrian teams. In 2020 (his third year), he somehow either didn't realize JG wasn't a good option or didn't have anyone ready to play behind him - both coaching problems and this team is perhaps worse than his first year. What else could he possibly expect from us? Should he expect us to cheer him on when he trots JG out there after it is obvious to everyone that he is losing games for the team and killing momentum? I mean, it was like watching Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy in Tin Cup take the shot and hit the water over and over and over and over again...except it didn't work out the last time. Should he expect us to be excited about getting murdered by UK because he kept playing JG or losing to Arkansas?
For me, I think we would be somewhat restless but understanding if he simply had beat USCe, Mizzou, UK, Arkansas, and Vandy. 5-5 in this strange season would suffice, but 3-7 with huge blowout losses is an entirely other matter.
Even with all of that said, I am of the opinion that we should only make a move if there is a relatively surefire coach who will take the job--like Freeze--or we should just stick with Pruitt given his absurd contract and the lack of other viable options. I mean, if we do not have a truly great coach lined-up, then let's hope he learns on the job. But UT fans always show up and I just don't know what else Pruitt wants from us.
