Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

I remember arguing with you about trying to be more optimistic this season after the Georgia game. And then he immediately followed that game up with the twin debacles at Kentucky and Arkansas and turned me right back into a jaded curmudgeon.

He stole my sunshine, Jack!

This whole situation sucks man. People think I’m a troll because of my negativity. I don’t see how you can be optimistic about this organization after everything that has happened since Kiffin left.

Some of you probably remember how ESPN was shocked that we were paying Monte Kiffin $1M a year. When we hired Lane Kiffin was the last time we cared about winning and subsequently the last time I was excited about Tennessee football. It’d be nice to shock ESPN again in a good way.

I would like to publicly apologize to @Kingston Vol. I have been pretty tough on you lately, without knowing what personal things you might be going through. I am truly sorry for any additional grief I have caused. I will say that I needed to be reminded that we are all people on here with real lives and all of us are probably having a tougher time than normal now and at any given time many of us will be going through some tough stuff.

Wow this is a big time hire for Kentucky. Stoops is such a good coach. UK is lucky to have him.

Maybe Art Briles? I think his best chance to get back into college coaching is to take an assistant position and then he could move up again.

I’m not scared of anything. At some point the football program in Knoxville is going to have to start being professional. At some point they have to do things the right way.

If you can’t secure an actual proven grownup to be your head football coach, then the responsible thing to do is avoid a search that leaves you scrambling and ending up hiring someone you aren’t in love with.

THAT’S what has happened the last two times. The search was mismanaged and became public, the job started looking toxic, and we had to settle for unqualified guys that we ALL had to do mental gymnastics to talk ourselves into believing the hire was a good one.

I’m not scared of the media, but the odds of hiring a good coach diminish rapidly once negative momentum builds in a search.
I don't disagree with you, but I can remember chuckling at Bama's search when RR said yes, then said no, & Saban said no (more than once I believe)... that search became very public & I guess it turned out okay for them.

I usually favor Whole Grain, but I support this message from you White Bread.
I feel like I’m losing my mind. I mean are we crazy for thinking this guy can’t do it? Someone please help me understand why we can’t make smart decisions and have nice things? This situation is maddening. It’s like hey, here’s a hot iron, if we unplug it, we won’t burn ourselves. Obvious, right? No. Let’s grab the hot end and see if it burns us?

All good, buddy! We're all chewing the fat on here waiting for something to make us feel like our devotion has been worthwhile.

This is likely true. It would have been a much more productive strategy than firing Brumbaugh in a moment of pique.

This statement alone speaks volumes. And that’s why I hope that if the powers that be can get anyone in the top 10-12 on their list to say yes, they go ahead and pull the trigger.

Got nothing on their resumes to prove that.

True. Don't think either would have been home runs. But likely would have recruited players and staff just as well, and arguably both would have been a more stable and inspiring leader of the program imo.

Who knows tho. I could be wrong. We haven't seen what Steele would do and Tucker hasn't had a full second season yet. But he did get a big job quickly.

I guess that depends on where you put the line. For the guys I consider top tier, yes. I think the elites are a very small club. But Pruitt is bottom-tier, so mid-tier is the playing field for most schools. Then you start layering in and prioritizing the variables-- are we going to hold firm with wanting a sitting coach, how important is rebuild experience, whose personality and style would be a good fit with UTAD and is that going to matter? And on it goes.
Why do we need someone with rebuild experience? I don't consider us a rebuild any more. We may not be in top 10 territory yet, but outside of a couple of positions, we are not that far off are we?

You gotta think about what the roster would look like when Pruitt is canned. How many of his guys leave etc..... We would probably be close to a rebuild, especially on the defensive side imo because a lot of those guys may follow him wherever he goes.

I respect all that you add to this forum, but I disagree on this one. I think of all the candidates out there, he is the most likely to be able to make us another Alabama/Clemson type program. He has seen it all, and coached at the highest levels.

I don't know that much about them, but I am sure that Campbell, Freeze, Briles are good coaches, but I think they lack in some areas. Campbell, I don't think has been anywhere near SEC football. So, there would probably be a big learning curve. Freeze and Briles have had their scandals, and that would likely follow them around everywhere they go. I would also be more concerned with Freeze that he would eventually end up in another recruiting scandal at some point.

It is hard to believe, but Lane Kiffine is only 45 - yes 45 - years old! He has a lot of coaching years ahead of him, but he has the experience of being an NFL coach, a coach at 2 SEC schools, he coached in the recruiting hot bed of Florida, and he has coached with Saban at Alabama.

Let's bury the hatchet, and start killing other teams! Just don't bring back Orgeron with him. That is one guy that I thought did us the dirtiest when they left.

We got to know the Kiffins in LA. I like them. Lane's matured a lot, and he'd tell you he would handle things differently at UT if he had a do-over. I just don't think now is the time. But IDT he's held in universal disdain at UT. And IDT he, personally, is lobbying for the (still non-existent) UT job.

Very classy and well done. 👍

Sorry to hear of the loss @Kingston Vol we're being extra cautious lately with Christmas. Will likely even mask up at the family gatherings.

Also I'm still on the Gus Bus!!!! "Not winning enough" is BS, as is the "retread" talk. Ya'll are welcome to not like him as a candidate, but it should be because ya don't want the run dominate offense we all know he'll bring to the table.

Hell I'm out on Chadwell because his style of shotgun/option offense isn't my cup of tea. He's also got limited success at the FBS level and his violations worry me...still mainly I don't want to see us running Air Force's offense. I'd be fine with Freeze, even though I prefer Gus. I think both should be real candidates if/when Pruitt is let go.

How much money has Pruitt cost the university with the buyouts of the assistants he has fired and how much more are they willing to spend to replace the next round?
